and pink_triangle ... genuine question earlier. Why do you not what Welsh players playing for team GB in the olympics?

I don't think anyone sees this as anything other than a one off for the London Olympics. None of the home nations want to risk their independent status with FIFA and they wouldn't have done it there was the risk. I'm fairly sure FiFA have given it the go ahead (not that their word means much).

Truth is, there is a team GB and our independent status is (apparently) safe. Any damage is done now. It would be nice if England, Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland all embraced it for the London games.

And damn right they should be pissed off about it, as there's still lots of in-built privileges within football for the 4 'home' nations. Add in however many decades it was of the home nations running FIFA as its own little club and it's hardly surprising that there's a dislike of the countries that don't have to follow the same rules as everyone else.

I belive that the addition of Giggs woud have probably been enough to win euro 96. However Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland would pretty much completely lose their identity in a team uk, so to say I am against the change is an understatement.

Yeah we got 30 seconds of Mark Austin looking awkward and then they broadcast the rest of the match in "normal D". A disgrace. Nearly knocked my bowl of beluga caviar over in disgust.

FIFA rules say new members have to be from a nation state. All other members are nation states. There's a special exemption within the rules that allows the home nations as non-nation states.

The International Football Association Board which sits above FIFA as the game's law-maker has one rep from each of the home nations and one from FIFA (tho the FIFA member has 4 votes).

And then until the early 70s, FIFA was run as a nice little club for the home nations with the others treated as an inconvenience who had nothing of major significance to contribute towards the game. It pissed everyone else off hugely, and the anger about it still runs VERY deep. It's the reason for the support that Blatter gets, and why we got fuck all votes in going for the WC (which was always clearly going to be the outcome to anyone with half a brain).

They're the major reasons I know of. There might be more tho.

My view is that from an English perspective there is very little difference between team England and team UK. Oh I am sure that the majority of English wouldnt want a team uk, I doubt its as high a proportion as scottish or welsh but dont have anything other than my gut instinct to back it up.

You're probably right, because the English don't dislike the Scottish and Welsh as much as you seem to dislike the English. English Manager? Really?! All the strongest candidates would be Scottish (thousands of them), Welsh (Sparky) and Northern Irish (Martin O'Neil). And they would bring into their backstaff whoever they thought best.

Anyway, this is all hypothetical, its not going to happen.
