Maybe they do watch their own clubs? But want to watch other games too? I don't follow Madrid or Barca but I'll watch every El Clasico.

I don't follow Chelsea or Bolton for that matter but I watched that game too.

Its a silly argument.

it's no more silly than wanting to watch overseas games and by doing so ensuring that your own football remains as shit.

But I've got to say that I'm surprised that it has. My thoughts on how they work the rules for these sorts of things had me thinking that the ref had seen the incident so there was no chance of it being overturned.

Be a pain in the arse if having to mute every replay too? The PL will push to ensure those it sells rights to, incorporate those items. What if they alternate where the logo is every 10 minutes, bottom left, bottom right, top right?

yep, that's possible - but there's limits to what they can realistically do. I'd have thought that the only possibility is for it to be at the top of the screen.

I get sick of watching snippets on the likes of the BBC News and Sky News channels where their news tickers &/or their on-screen clock covers up the important part of the action.

If people started to lose bits of the games because of the logo then less people would pay for it - and the Prem would be no better off.

I've gotta say, the guy who's written that piece is an ignorant prick, as demonstrated by these lines early in the piece...

Astonishingly, the court delivered a hammer blow to the notion that Premier League and other sports rights can be sold on a country-by-country basis, saying such a situation is "contrary to EU law".

Nothing about that is "astonishing". Anyone with the most basic knowledge of EU laws knew for sure how this ruling would go. Certainties don't come any better.

And there's this...

The short term result for consumers is that we will sneak out and buy a foreign satellite decoder card, then watch Premier League games in Greek

For the vast majority of games there's English commentary direct from the foreign broadcaster.

So no foreign fans then? Reducing the viewership for an English premier league match from 75 million globally in 202 countries to 4 million people? Or zero even, as you hope is the case? And leave Barca/Madrid/Milan/Juve etc to keep their 75 million weekly viewers? Effectively killing the game in England, forcing all the good English players to go to Spain, Germany and Italy to make a living and making sure no foreign talent comes to England to play and ensuring a devastating impact on the England national team?

You haven’t thought this though have you? Its fine if you live up the road from your club but what about the millions in Asia who want to watch a Premier League game? Fuck them?

So Aldershot play at 3pm on Saturday. You go to the game and then go home and watch Barca play at 9pm on Sky Sports.

How is that making Aldershot remain shit?

Asia - Huge market all the clubs are trying to get into. The English games get shown on TV there early in the morning/late at night. They can watch them AND go to their own teams games too.

Yep, they could do. Just as you could watch Irish games but don't - because your interest and time and money for footie is tied up in watching the Prem.

Simple fact is that everyone has a threshold for the time and money that can be allocated to the non-necessities of life, so what you say could happen doesn't happen.

I've been getting a choice of 3pm games at home for a couple of years now, all at a fraction if what sky charge .... Still not 100% legit though

Agree 100%. But should people not be free to choose what they watch? When and where?

In principle, yes. In reality, no.

Because the "in principle" aspect gets to mean in reality that the decision on what they can watch is taken away from them.

What I mean is that a person can't watch reasonable quality Irish footie because there is none is available to them, because all possibility of the Irish game raising its quality to that watchable level is undermined by the choice of the Irish to watch the Prem.

The role of FIFA is to try and expand interest and the playing of the game around the world. Sadly that's an idea that is fatally undermined by the actions of the Prem in selling that version of the game all around the world.

Yes fuck Asian supporters of the Premier League. Why should I have to miss games for my team that I have bought tickets for, just because Sky change the date late in the day, ultimately to satisfy some "supporters" on the other side of the world?

The TV rights are sold currently for the league not the club. Which means all clubs must get shown live (i.e. not on Saturday at three o'clock).

Selfishly you're happy that a TV company has the power to move whichever game they like so that you get to watch El Clasico when convenient to you. Which fucks off Barcelona and Real Madrid fans.

However, far worse than that, is the fact that due to the TV deal, Almeria v Deportivo gets moved (which you don't even care about), just like Blackpool v WHU (for example) gets moved to a Monday night for TV coverage, completely fucking it for the supporter that goes.

All for the "benefit" of armchair "supporters" half way round the world who don't care anyway!

I notice these supporters who are getting fucked off don't complain when the current structure makes it possible for them to sign talented Argentinians whos performances keep their club in the top division.

Didn't hear anyone complain about it that season.

Spanish TV rights are a mess.

Real Madrid and Barcelona receive about 140 million euros (£120m) a year each from television rights, while small clubs such as Levante, Malaga or Real Sociedad get just 12 million euros.

Thats just domestic aswell. Double of what the winner of the prem gets, and then CL on top.

Ignoring the fact that that did not happen, even had it done, it would only have done so because every other club in the league was in the same position. If they all weren't in that position, the club wouldn't have needed to sign the players in the first place...

Besides which, people have been complaining since 1992. Prior to 92 in fact when the idea was first mooted. So if you didn't hear any complaining, you're either too young, or a post Sky fan...
