There's no context given for that quote and:

"Contrary to what he says, the Avalon is a substantial stage and there is huge excitement about the Wombles' appearance."

Makes me wonder if Eavis is worried The Wombles will have a Rolf-like draw and cause potential over-crowding problems that haven't really been planned for. Rather than just no wanting them because he thinks they're naff. Plus he's going to save a fortune on employing litter-pickers after the festival.

I think regardless of whether it actually was or not, it's a bit harsh to say that before they've actually played. They could be brilliant for all we know, the joy is finding out on the day.

I know it's probably been taken out of context but it must not make the people behind the Wombles feel very appreciated or happy to play at the festival.

I agree with DeanoL. I'm pretty sure its going to be rammed at Avalon when they play, as it was last year for The Wurzels. Something like 15,000 i remember hearing! Still a rubbish thing to say though.

Exactly, coming in a year when Glastonbury appears to have booked half of it's main-stage acts based on radio one airplay, this is one of the silliest quotes (or mis-quotes) I've read in sometime.

A few places are reporting it with the extra quote:

He added: “Mr Eavis also said he didn’t think Take That would suit his audience, so The Wombles are in great company.”

Which also seems bizarre. Beyonce works but Take That don't? And Robbie did Glasto some years ago.

It can't be that he is really complaining about having amusing novelty acts in seriousness, what with the popularity in recent years of Rolf, Vanilla Ice, N-Dubz and the Gorillaz.

This quote's now being widely reported but with no explanation as to when he said it, who to and what they'd asked.

Personally I think it'll be good fun and they'll probably get one of the biggest crowds teh Avalon will have all weekend.

Read the article and it is more a PR piece for The Wombles. After all Eavis disapproves of Wombles is far more newsworthy.

the acts he has paid a lot of money for on Pyramid Stage.
