Protests about U2 Playing

Guest HurrahBrother

Apparently some people will be protesting about U2 playing, nothing to do with the music, but rather that they have been using loopholes to avoid paying tax in their home, Ireland.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2011/jun/03/u2-glastonbury-tax-protesters?

Protesters at Glastonbury are planning to float an over-sized bundle of fake cash from one part of the crowd, under an Irish tricolour, to another section of the audience under a Dutch flag.

Another press stir up; Nothing else better to write..

U2 are not the only tax efficient band... shrewd I call it, otherwise HM Gov

wants a huge slice of it

Obviously it comes at a price - They can only step foot in their homeland

for a small proportion of the year

I'm sure the band put £££££££££ back into the Irish / British economy so its a invalid arguement. And if they did try a "protest" 99,998 of the

100,000 expected will still enjoy i'm sure

Good! tax dodging multi millionaires are scum, Ireland is in the shitter at the moment why should the super rich get away with it when essential services are being slashed.

This sort of protest is what glastonburys all about, its hedonism with a social coinsience, good on'em.

Oh and Nal I'll gladly stop you ripping anything up if I see them :)

It's only tax evasion if it's illegal. Otherwise it's just tax "planning" and is available to any person/business. I don't agree with it and think that Countries operating as tax havens should have sanctions against them, but crowd surfing a prosthetic pile of money in front of St Bonio and his cronies will make no f**king difference.

Actually U2 are humanists - They donate, and are active in charitable causes, its insulting and igronant to say that Billy Braggs Leftfield will have issue with them

I Don't think you can compare them with greedy banks; They have earnt their money thought talent

and pay their taxes.

Why do papers pick continue to bang on about U2 for moving out of Ireland -

Sure Paul McCartney props up Liverpools taxes does he?

What About Tom Jones giving us welsh his tax money from LA

or Rod Stewart the honorary scotsman?

Just thinking about what U2 they have been involved in

1984-5 Band Aid/Live Aid and later Live8

1986 Bono helped to organise amnesty international conspiracy of hope tour

also contributed to artists against arpartheid

1993 Bono/edge appeared in the festival against racism

Bono helped create the One campaign against poverty

He also contributed to the Debt AIDS trade africa to help aids relief and debt reduction in africa.

He's been nominated for the Nobel peace prize no less than 3 times

He is involved in no less than 34 charities;-

Red cross,Oxfam,UNICEF,Greenpeace, All things close to the Glastonbury ethos

I could go on... In short they are a generous band in time and money, and we should be grateful of the lives they have infleunced

That is the funny thing behind the truth: It's not okay for U2 because Bono gives a *huge* amount of his time and effort to this (mostly very, very effective) stuff, but the Rolling Stones get a pass because they give exactly zero time and effort to anything even remotely like this.

What a f**king joke. Am pretty sure it will never happen and these pricks are just blowing hot air.

It's not illegal if true and Bono love him or hate him has done more for the third world than most.

If i was in his position i'd prob do the same.

I'll give them Bonos address and the studios address in Dublin if people want to go protest there. Fine. Putting a downer on peoples night at Glasto, most of whom couldn't give a f**k,is exceptionally poor. Typical soft cocked, glory hunting "charity". Arse clenchingly embarrassing.

tax evasion, get it right, it's tax avoidance, perfectly legal and f**king sensible!

Why should anybody pay more tax than anybody else? You get nothing more for your additional tax than the benefit scroungers!

You work hard to get where you are and then are penalised for been successful. It's bollocks and if idiot protesters want to try and spoil this I suggest a mass counter-protest of piss throwing at them.
