I reckon there will be a load of rumours stating that David Bowie's playing the spirit of 71 stage. Every year there's a Bowie rumour, there was even one last year we were told that he was going to be playing the Pyramid stage before Muse on the Saturday by these drunk farmers who camped next to us.

It's an idea that is spread through a population through people imitating that idea and evolves. Richard Dawkins first coined the term in The Selfish Gene as a metaphor for explaining genes, so it's way older than 4chan. It can be anything from a cultural idea to a catchphrase on a tv show to annoying 4chan jerks repeating the same damn pictures in every thread they come across.

It's basically an in joke that every tags on to. e.g. last year was everyone shouting out "Alan!" based on that BBC clip.
