i went for the first app my search returned that'll email me the contacts - which is good enough for me.

So I guess I'll try the card in the new phone now and see what happens.

Nope. Giving it to google is giving it the NSA/GHCQ*. Plus the thieving fuckers at Google ripped me off for £2k this summer too, and so I closed all of my accounts with them.

(* Yes, I know that NSA/GCHQ will get all my data anyway, but at least i'm making them work a little harder for it.)

Best thing about the new phone? I can now get a frigging signal in my house.

I think you'll find that Android will sync all your contacts to google without you realizing it anyway. Easiest way to check... log into gmail from a computer, and look at your contacts list.

£135 for a quad core android device with that resolution is dirt cheap! I'll be interested to see how it performs.

can anyone with a Sony phone tell me why the red light at the top of the phone might be flashing?

The only thing I can find by googling is a suggestion that it's because the phone needs charging, but the battery indicator is saying it's at 69% which seems a bit high for a warning light.

Do you mean the one that's the size of a big pin prick?

nah, it's bigger than that.

It's central at the top of the phone, and it's the light that is permanently lit with a slightly different red (a more-orangey red) when the phone is charging.

That blinking red light might be to indicate no signal as that's a problem I had in the house with my previous phone, tho the normal graphical signal indicator on phone is showing one bar.

I've just upgraded the missus to the 21st century, and got her an Acer Liquid Z3.

That has Android 4.2, a dual-core 1GHz processor, and a 3.5inch screen - and cost £80 (contract free).

Not a bad price, and not a bad phone either tho of course there's better.

I had the previous Acer Liquid (never used it personally, stuck with my old n900 but gave the handset to my daughter). Really well built and a nice little droid device for the price. No doubt in my mind that the new z3 is a good choice.

Bought a HTC One phone earlier in the year, I usually have an iPhone, I don't think I'll ever go back.

Apple are too restrictive, I can now download films from the torrent sites amongst other things which suits me just fine.

yeah, I said that when I left Apple for android. 18 months later, I was back with apple. The closed eco system of apple does have its advantages, and the handset doesnt slow down to a crawl like my galaxy s3 did.

Try your local market, most have a stall which would be able to help with that. Failing that a fair few people I know have bought the parts themselves on ebay and done the job themselves using youtube video tutorials, fiddly work but quite a saving.

Yep I bought a replacement screen for a kindle on ebay from china, and it was easy to fit myself using guides on the internet. I suspect phones are no different.

Broke the screen on my S4 last weekend by dropping it.

Looks very tricky to self-replace by looking online, would cost me about £25 in parts plus time. Or I could send it away for £50-60 to get repaired.

Glad I have mobile phone insurance through my bank!, £25 and it's done for me.

I think it's a good decision. There have been lots of tasks I've achieved by watching youtube tutorials, a worthy resource imo.
