arcade fire before u2 on the friday

Are Elbow just a lot bigger in the south or are their fans just a bit blinded? They are no where near big enough to headline and subbing is pushing it, they haven't even sold out standing on any arena tour dates and there has been little real talk of the new album within the press.

A solid back catalogue plus a hint of mainstream success does not necessarily mean a 'huge' band.

People really do have a very warped idea of where bands should play at festivals. Arcade Fire under U2? Very much wishful thinking and if it did happen it would be a huuuuuge exception to what normally happens.

Elbow aren't massively my cup of tea but I'd never argue their status to sub.

That's the nice thing about Glasto, bands playing higher up aren't always there because they've out sold every other band on the bill. They're often booked in higher spots because they've earned it or they're an entertaining band who are given a chance to show everyone what they've got...and occasionally because they've outsold every other band on the bill ;)

It's a crying shame Coldplay were put infront of Arcade Fire, I totally appreciate that even though U2 aren't to many people's tastes, it will be completely unique and a classic Glastonbury moment, but Coldplay have 'been there, done that'.

U2, Arcade Fire, Beyonce

Would have been far more appealing to a greater breadth.

I would love arcade fire to sub and elbow before, but I also think elbow deserve that higher slot, they headlined Bestival last year so surely are capable of subbing U2 (who I also don't think are the biggest band in the world right now, but thats just my opinion). Also Elbow manage create a great live atmosphere which anyone that saw them on the other stage in 2008 would agree with. Hopefully if they do sub you doubters will be proved very wrong.

They def couldn't headline that would be an outrage they've only had 1 successful album (and i know that seldom seen kid is like their 4th or 5th album or something) so surely bands that play in the sub slot, particularly before U2 who are without question the biggest band in the world. IMO the acts who sub should at least have been successful for a good few years whereas elbow have only really been 'mainstream famous' for 2/3 years. take last year for example, dizzee rascal has been famous for a long time with a few famous albums under his belt, scissor sisters have had 3 albums and faithless have had several, whereas elbow will only have 2 successful albums by time glasto comes round (if their new album is successful). also, the calibre of bands who have supported u2 are all headliners in their own right (muse, jay z, snow patrol, kasabian to name a few) and I know that elbow supported U2 for their wembley stadium gigs but its their first glasto headlining slot, and surely if its such a momentous occasion that they've written a song especially for glastonbury, surely the person who plays before them should be a big big name, which i feel elbow just simply are not at this point in time. maybe in the future but not now.

Maybe it's just i don't like the prospect of pure dad rock dominating the first day of glasto, i will for sure be elsewhere, unless aracde fire deliver and take the spot that should rightly be theirs.

No, Arcade Fire sold out the vast majority of every date within one weekend. Only Birmingham didn't sell out, and I hate to stereotype but there's probably some cultural explanation for that.

I'm not saying Elbow are bad at all, I'm impartial to them. I'm just debating their actual stature.

I saw Elbow on the Pyramid Stage seven years ago. This was years before their 'mainstream' success, they'd released their first two records I think. They were on at around 5pm. With another three albums (including their most successful one), I don't see why they couldn't be on in the penultimate slot. Particularly as they've already supported the rumoured headline band on a tour.

Yeah but following their most successful album in 2008, they were 3rd from top on the other stage, so playing around 7pm, not much of a big upgrade imo, so for me jumping from there to subbing u2 on the pyramid, seems like a jump that is not justified. But as everyone on this forum says, without differing opinions this forum would be no fun!! but imo i just dont feel they justify subbing the biggest band on the planet.

don't get me wrong, im not expecting an act of muse or kasabian's size to be announced as sub headliner, that would be ridiculous. All I'm syaing is is that i think imo Elbow are't big enough for that slot yet, maybe in a couple of years time but i just feel that now is not the time. there are plenty of other bands who are big enough though to sub headline, just not elbow

    • Same here, when the lineup dropped it looked very strong but this year I’m considering more whether I buy tickets for enjoyment or fomo.   Speaking of that dilemma, I caved and bought a Turnstile Piece Hall ticket so I’ll see you there 😂
