arcade fire before u2 on the friday

I agree with a previous poster that Arcade Fire, whilst brilliant, are not as big as some on this board think. They are not known to the casual music fan who bases his/her music choices on Radio 1 and the like. Ask your average joe to name an Arcade Fire track and they give you a blank look. And a lot of people who are not music obsessives like people on this board go to Glastonbury.

They would pull a big crowd if they played before U2 because of their own fans and those getting there early for U2. But IMO it wouldn't be any bigger than Kasabian in 2007, Kasabian in 2009 or Faithless last year (all of who were boosted by the headliners crowds also- it was a nightmare making it back from LCD last year to watch Stevie!)

So heres hoping they do play Glasto before U2 because at least they will be playing.

Radio 1 have been banging on about Arcade fire since Neon Bible, if not before.

They're currently one overly popular album away from being hated by the "too cool for Radio 1" kids! The Suburbs is the equivalent of KOL's Because of the Times.

I'm baffled by Arcade Fire's crowd-pulling ability, 5k at Oxegen and 60k at Reading...it's ridiculous! They're an incredible live act, and i'm sure the sceptics would be blown away by seeing them on the Pyramid stage. I'd definitely go to see them, but i'm skipping out on U2 because their crowd will be huge and also U2 are dogsh*t.

Arcade Fire into U2 would be incredible.

I hate this whole 'hating U2 on principle' thing that a lot of people seem to have. Forget Bono's self righteousess and the lacklustre No Line On The Horizon and just remember that Achtung Baby, War and The Joshua Tree are all brilliant albums, and they are still a great live band.

And Arcade Fire have made me keep my faith in modern music; that a band can walk the line between mass accessibility and artistic integrity.

I don't think it helped AF that The Suburbs came out at the start of August; when the Reading line-up was announced in March, a lot of people I know were very confused as to why they were headlining and as soon as they saw Pendulum headlining the NME stage at the same time, their minds were made up. I'd be surprised if they did have the lowest attendance there as Guns n Roses was quite empty, I came back into the main stage area after seeing Blood Red Shoes and they'd only just started the set, what with being an hour late, a lot of people had left already.

I wouldn't say AF have received anywhere near the publicity of KOL - KOL they started creeping into the daytime playlists with Fans from BoTT and have been played by those daytime DJs ever since, the only time you're likely to hear AF on Radio 1 is in the evening when the mass audience isn't listening, hence why the Hyde Park gig hasn't sold out.

Also, I think they split opinion somewhat, I know people who absolutely love them as much as I do but there are others who just don't get them.

    • Mac DeMarco also cancelled
    • I'm British so it very much would apply for me.   I mean, it's a moot point as I don't have tickets so will not be in town for this, but I've heard reports of lengthy queues and given I remember Lisbon Airport having a long queue at arrivals even pre-EES when I went in 2023, I seem to guess it might be quite the wait, depending on flight paths.   Certainly, the worst I've had pre-EES was a 45 minute wait for a stamp at Valencia Airport in Spain, where 4 flights to non-EU destinations in quick succession were placed one after the other. So I can't say I'm enthusiastic about what's in store. Or you know. Maybe I'm just overthinking it.
    • Out of interest keep seeing messages saying last 12 hours etc… to buy you full weekend tickets.  Whats that about? Do they take them off sale early?
