No one even remembers the windows 95 thing. (I mean the Buddy Holly video was on the launch disc, thats it). Sweater Song was a bit of a cult hit before then and the first album sold pretty solidly over here. We also need to remember that the band have sold around 1.5 million records over here. Its quite a lot!

Neil - Shocking thing to say that they are only big due to their Windows 95 tie in.

That 'Happy Days' video won tons and tons of awards even before Windows 95 came out. I remember it being the 'OK Go' video of its day.

that Happy Days video was doing the rounds on pre-release win95 disks for at least 6 months before win95 was released. It's quite possibly the case that any awards they won for the vid was the result of the vid being put before the eyes of those 'decision makers' via win95.

It's easy to forget that videos didn't really work on computers until win95, and the first vid the vast majority of people back then saw on computers was that Weezer vid. And then they saw it again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again. And again. There weren't really any other videos to watch.

And it's very relevant that more people had access to that vid via win95 than they did via the likes of MTV.

Win95 sold more than 1.5M copies in this country in its first year!!

I think you're hugely under-estimating the effect of that vid being on the win95 disk. It brought Weezer to more people's attention than any other media form did.

I really doubt that

Why?

Win95 sold HUGELY (particulrly to businesses - which was where most people encountered a computer back then; there weren't so many with computers at home). Far fewer people back then had Sky, their only way to access MTV, the only other place they'd have been able to see that vid.

I'd guess the Weezer video was used because it had been so succesful, as opposed to the other way round.

Nope. It was used because it was a good vid. The success came after.

!.5 million business punters, of which a few percent would be vaguely interested in Weezer, against MTV who would have a much higher percentage of interest...

Whoooaaa!! I didn't say that just 1.5M copies of win95 were sold in its first year. I said it sold more than that.

  • 1 month later...

Whilst the quality of their recorded works waynes (it becomes ever harder to argue against Pitchfork's assertion that they are the worst band ever to have made 2 classic albums), that are still a delightful live band. Would be really awesome for them to play.

But then what do I know? Apparently we're all mindless idiots who only like them because Microsoft told us to

some people have hugely over-active imaginations. Or just like spouting worthless bollocks.

Did I say that, or anything like it? Nope.

What I did say is that Windows introduced Weezer to millions of people who otherwise quite possibly wouldn't know of their existence.

Now grow up, please.

If they do play, I hope they cover Teenage Dirtbag again. Was an unexpected treat at Leeds last year.

Would also give me the opportunity to bash any Teenage Dirtbag neigh-sayers with my practiced robust defence of the song, 'you might thing it's rubbish, but it's actually a brilliant song... etc'.

I thought they were excellent at Reading, wasnt sure what to expect but was really impressed.

As an aside they had a big crowd but can't imagine too many of those watching would have ever seen a win95 promo disc. That may have helped them in their early years but unless you've got something else to offer it's not going to be getting them decent festival bookings fifteen years later..

TBH, I never rated Buddy Holly but thought the video was clever. No idea of the Win95 tie in though. It was Hash Pipe that hooked me in and I bought/loved the Green and Blue albums.

Never seen them live. Would try to if they were at Glasto without a doubt.

They were outstanding at Leeds

I was a bit worried before they started that people were there to get a decent place for Paramore or Blink 192 and didnt care much for Weezer, and that'd it'd be a bit of a letdown show

But they became almost everyone's band of the weekend instantly, and the fact they did it at both sites is unreal!

And it's obvious that being on win95 helped them get noticed on a much wider scale, that amount of advertising could only really bring more attention to them. It's just a form of getting a big break before myspace and youtube could be used to get your music out there.

But the fact they're brilliant is why they're still going and playing to massive crowds :)

They are playing Sonisphere on the 9th July. Would they play glasto too being that they are two weeks apart, is that too close to make return trips accross the atlantic and too long to wait inbetween gigs? (they apparently won't do their own tour over here because it's too expensive for tem to do it, so not much chance of a tour between the two dates.)

It would be lovely though. They should headline all three nights of the Park stage, Friday Pinkerton, Saturday Blue album, Sunday Greatest hits set.
