It honestly doesn't seem like it was 6 years ago today that he died. Music and radio has never been the same since!

His legacy is still felt in music today and it's sad that Radio 1 has nothing similar to fill the massive hole he left. All the Dj's these days on Radio 1 feel like carbon copies of each other playing the same music.

I can't believe it's been six years. I remember the day it happened, I don't think I've ever felt so sad to hear someone had died that I had never met. He was a true legend and I love seeing the videos of him just enjoying himself wandering around at Glastonbury. He was a one off and he's still sorely missed.

  • 1 month later...

Have just finished the opus that is Malgrave of the Marshes. A friend lent it around a year ago; only remembered I'd not yet started it the other week.

Has enabled me to go dig out the few Peel tapes I have, which are mainly 90s Festive 50s and one of when he had a week's run on daytime radio 1 back round that period. Refreshing! That said, never did I tune in religiously, had tastes that were too narrow back in those days.

So anyway, who is his closest approximation on the radio these days? Riley, as above? Kershaw, who's not been on due to personal problems? One of his sons? Rob Da Bank? & when and where are they on?

Only as I've got 10 days coming up with which to twiddle my thumbs inbetween making toys work, trying not to overeat/drink, and trying to tick off one of the longstanding DIY projects. So thought I'd try to tune in to a few recommended shows and see if any hook me.

Not sure if you're aware of it TSU, but Peel Wiki has literally hundreds of recordings of JP shows. Varying quality as you can understand, but is f**king brilliant :)

I really like Marc Rileys show, love Rob Da Bank. I've found Tom Ravenscroft's shows a bit hard to get into

Nice one Al. Something else to finely tune my grumpy old man skills to :D

Edit & note to self: Tom 9pm to midnight on Friday 6Music. Seeing as I'm often in drinking myself extra grumpy at that time, must try him out. :)

Whereas Rob Da Bank seems to be 5am Saturdays on 1FM. Is that his only slot in radio-world these days?

    • If you didn't see melt banana at Apolo. Go see them at the festival. Insane.
    • Interesting, and thanks for coming back to give an update! I've seen that the second stage looks bigger than usual too, looks to be a Serious Stages - Stellar Stage from distance photos.    Seems like sizing wise stages have been scaled up somewhat this year.
    • I see its cancelled now but they did leave it really late to announce plus they are up against Kelburn Garden Party Festival not to far from the festival site.
    • Easily my favourite set of the day.
