Things that make you feel old

At the moment it is the horrible realisation that I am not just old compared to teenagers now - I am old compared to 25 & 30 year olds! I look at proper grown women who I really still think are my peers - and realise they are seeing me as someone a generation older. That is actually quite weird.

A serious realisation that I just totally wasn't on the same page as I thought I was came when it was my birthday, and our apprentice at work (who was 22) asked how old I was. I said "Oh - frighteningly ancient" - so she asked me again, and I told her I was 45. Her response? "Oh that's not old! That's only a year older than my mum!"

I think only people in my age bracket and older can understand how gutting that was - it wasn't that I was older than her mum, it was that it never occurred to her that I wouldn't be pleased or flattered by only being a year older than her mum!

Mostly I am really happy with myself regardless of age because I still have a life that many half my age have given up on, but it's those moments when you realise that your outside doesn't match your inside - hmmmm.

Going to see 30 Seconds To Mars and instead of getting into the spirit of things, all the audience participation stuff, and being all hyper and excited just like everyone else, resisting orders to 'raise your hands' 'jump jump jump' etc. And feeling cynical enough to see it all as power tripping and ego feeding. And to start analysing conformity issues among the supposedly alternative groups.

I feel really bloody ancient tonight.

When you're a kid you desperately want people to think that you are older than you are.

Then you go through the period of hoping people will think you are younger than you are.

I've reached the lovely stage of equilibrium where I don't care what people think.

I'll be getting old when I reach the final stage when you try to give the impression once again that you are older than you are - e.g. "I'm in my 83rd year you know," says a person who's actually 82.

Yeah I'm quite an analytical person anyway, and I've always resisted group pressure. They got the audience to make a sign with their hands in the air, and then said 'to all of you who have raised your hands, welcome to the 30 Seconds to Mars family'.

And all I could do is think in-group/out-group stuff.

I wasn't drunk enough either, that would have probably helped with the social indoctrination. Makes you more suggestible.

Plus, I've heard it all before with My Chemical Romance.

Bloody Americans!
