I think we were talking about looking at it after the game as a system of review rather than stopping the game there and then. I'm in favour of bringing in a review system anyway. It wouldn't hold the game up long, would be fair and would undermine the tactic of cheating.

I agree that the footie offside rule is hard to understand - but most women seem to get it if explained with that shop queue analagy.

And I don't understand the technical nuances of rugby despite having played it as a kid at school (tho not to 'school team' level) - none of those bits were covered in any detail, if at all. But perhaps things might have been different if I'd have been brought up in an area where a greater amount of rugby was played.

notice you put england first though. of course you can have soft spots for teams. like my grandawas polish and i like to see them doing well. i'm still 100% a scotland fan though.

I'd say the offside rule in Rugby is far more complex than the one in Football.

There's different versions of it for a start, different rules for line outs as opposed to scrums etc, different rules when you Kick

I've just emailed to ask him who he'd support in the World Cup final, I suspect England.

Thinking about it, I lived in Kenya as a boy, both my parents are English, I used to support Kenyan athletes over GB ones in the Olympics back then but wouldn't now

Hmm. There are different versions of offside in rugby for rucks, mauls, and line outs, but they all stem from the same basic principle. i.e. trying to gain an advantage from being in front of the ball. So I don't think it's complicated at all.

I would agree it's more complicated than the version of the offside in football that should be in place. However, it's not, and the current version in use, regarding when a player is active or not is more ambiguous than the offside rule in rugby IMO.

I'm happy to agree to disagree though. :P

If the injury to Van persie is bad then it probably is :( What a player he would be if he could stay fit, but at some point we're going to have to make a decision to replace him as we can't go on with out top striker only playing half our games (if we're lucky).

but still england :P

i dunno, obviously there will be exceptions to the rules for whatever reason. but i think supporting liverpool because your dad does, if you live 5 miles away from say brightons ground is ridiculous. as i was constantly told on here about me supporting celtic. just one of the many reasons i rightly switched.

No you aren't. You're for a referee. You're for a whistle to stop play. You're for lines around the box to give the ref a better impression of what is and is not a penalty or to indicate when a goalkeeper has and has not handled the ball. You're for linesmen waving flags to denote offsides.

What you're against is modern technology of a much more efficient, fair and certain kind because you think it will halt play.

Ball over the line should deffo be reviewable in play, and potentially tight offside calls.

tight offside calls? You're having a giraffe.

How can there be redress for something which is called offside but isn't?

And so the ideas fall apart. It's just not workable.

You'll see that 77's already given an example: where the referee is unsure and gives a gesture.

So you have an officiate panel. You don't undermine the possibility of law and fairer practice with the idea that it's not perfect.

So hand it out in such instances.

Well this is where we differ. I despise the purist notion of football. It's changed a number of ftimes over the years in terms of rules, but we didn't mind that. It's regularly stopped for fouls due to our intolerance of cheating, yet no one seems to mind that.

It's also beautifully uneventful. There's more controversy talked about than action in football. I feel that traditionalists and purists fear that this kind of system would expose its inactivity, which would lead to all kinds of novel ideas. This is, of course, rubbish.

all of which is not workable in practice.

    • I'm surprised they risked it, especially after nearly missing their Glasto 22 slot under similar circumstances  I did see someome say Ellie didnt sound as strong as recently but I'm guessing playing 3 shows in 2 different continents doesnt help that    On the topic though I can definitely see them doing a Fontaines and having a break over winter before a few final Clearing shows next summer
    • That's fair on WA - I did recall people thinking Fontaines would take this year off before this was announced.    On the subject of Wolf Alice, they did Lollapalooza in Chicago on Saturday then Kendal Calling last night. Bit of an odd choice, no? Half imagine at Kendal that they would've been just exhausted.
    • Just logged onto the app to start planning my days and there really are a LOT of stages missing. Apart from the Seaside Stage there is no Casemates this year etc. Apart from the Seaside Stage, there are no Casemates this year, etc. Can't see anything about the kids field really. And there's local acts that are normally there like Kojak's Revenge that aren't appearing either.  Normally we get down fairly early but I can't see anything before 3pm I'm keen to see. Only one real clash as well, which is good, but it's thin and it's not thin in the sense of "I've seen a lot of these acts before"
