It's always the same when religion gets to over-ride all sense.

It's probably not much of a surprise tho for most people when thinking of the Irish Republic's attitude towards this sort of thing.

What does surprise many people tho - including the majority of British MP's (until recently, anyway; a survey was recently carried out about this) - is that the situation is almost identical in Northern Ireland, where abortion is still illegal 45 years after it was made legal on the British mainland.

personally, I think a candidate of one of those parties getting the position is just what's needed to kill the whole idea dead.

The tories are only doing this because it's expected that the tory candidate will win every post. The giveaway with that is clearly shown by the fact that they won't allow a vote for a London Crime Commissioner - because they know there's a risk of them losing that one (but only that one).

The voting patterns in England for over a century gets to show it's an easy win for the tories in every police authority (except perhaps the Met - see above).

Whilst I don't think predictions are definitive, what you're suggesting isn't being predicted as correct:

OK, perhaps I'm over-stating it ... BUT....

Which party dominates the current Police Authority's in those areas? So the tories aren't losing anything there; it's worth it to them for the sole control they'll gain in other places.

well, no it's true...look at the powers the mayor has and look at the powers the PCCs will have and they're the same....

And the tory is in power. If they had an election, a tory wouldn't be in power over the police.

Maybe, maybe not, but it's completely beside the point because the mayor already exercises the powers a PCC would have (a decision which was taken before the last mayoral election, by the way)

Whatever, I still can't see how a toothless figurehead is a fair exchange for accountability from the only body who are able to be accountable for crime issues.

It's a con, a scam, a PR stunt. One that will be used to rob us no less than the govt helps corporations rob us.

According to this week's Private Eye, the paedophile ring linked to ten Downing Street that Tom Watson raised in Parliament is nothing to do with any rumours about Lord McAlpine or Welsh Children's homes .... and while nothing further has come out about this, remember that Dave Moron responded in a manner that suggested that he knew of the story himself.

I would imagine that Bristol had a fairly high turn out given that they were voting on the mayor today aswell.

I doubt it very much.
