When someone's up on stage promoting something hateful, what difference does it make that they're a product of their surroundings?

If some act was strutting around on the Pyramid stage promoting white supremacy, would you think it made it OK, if someone were to argue "Oh, they were brought up in a Boer settlement, they're a product of their surroundings"?

He *could* rap about what a terrible state of affairs it is in the deprived parts of American cities. Plenty of successful rap acts do. Most of the other big gangsta rap acts have an element of "ain't it a terrible shame" to them, but not Snoop. Instead he raps about how great it is, on account of how he's on top. He was a gang member and still boasts about it -- he's in a position to at least slow down the Crips/Bloods war, instead he continues to fuel it. The porn he makes is of the most exploitative kind. He continues to talk about pimping as if it's not only acceptable, but glamorous.

Have you spent any time thinking about what pimping is? The fine detail? Branding/tattooing your girls to mark ownership; getting them hooked on heroin or crack as a means of control; beating them up if they step out of line or try to escape... And you're happy to watch a man strut around, smirking on stage, telling stories about how he does/did this -- and treat it as a lovely party.

He is one of the best Mc's in the game, has a good back catalogue and can work a crowd brilliantly.

For anyone struggling to get him listen to Doggystyle, its a bona fide hip hop classic. Gin n Juice is gonna be amazing, really hope he plays it.

He will be equally as good whether you are stood up dancing or just chilling on the grass with da herb.

I think its a great booking. I love getting to see random acts like this at Glastonbury who I wouldn't pay to see at one of their own gigs

Bad stuff happens in the world. We shouldn't let people sing about it, that would be terrible.

Bad stuff happens in the world. If people sing *celebrating* that bad stuff, I don't think decent people should flock to watch, clap and cheer them.

Now, there's a long history of people taking the role of a "bad" narrator. Johnny Cash's Cocaine Blues for example. But those songs tend to wind up as tragedies.

NWA's f**k the Police, Ice T's Cop Killer, those were protest songs against a corrupt, violent police force. No problems there. (Though it didn't feel right to be in a crowd of white middle class kids at Reading chanting "f**k the police", when all any of us had experienced was decent British bobbies).

Snoop *celebrates* and *promotes* a despicable lifestyle. He causes people to aspire to that lifestyle.

No sure how I feel about this one. Snoop has one of the best flows around and its hard not be drawn into his easy rhymes and laconic tone. Plus he should put on an awesome show so on the face of it things should be awesome.

But on the other hand I'm with ukslim on this one. I listen to a fair amount of hip-hop and have never had too much problem with the more 'gansta' end of the scale. My view is that I'll happily watch a Tarantino film filled with drugs, swearing and violence, so why is there this thing with hip-hop which states all these things where they appear, are unacceptable? That said, even with this opinion, I find Snoop's stuff too far past the line. Drugs and guns and gangs I can deal with, violence against women as recreation and glorification of prostitution I can't.

I also don't hold with this attitude that because I'm not from a black-american background, I have no right to have an opinion on a set of ethics which comes from that background. Fair enough I might not understand certain cultural issues, but I still know that murder, rape and selling sex workers is wrong. There are plenty of positive messages that come out of black america, so why should we settle for/promote the bad ones?
