Wasn't trying to have a person attack, and this is a big argument, limits of free speech etc, (and I suspect i'm in a minority) but to get back on topic at the end of the day it's Eavis's festival and it's his farm so he's entitled to have who he likes (or doesn't) even if i disagree. I buy my ticket and accept his judgement and I've got to say he doesn't do too bad!

Tis a dilemma. Two words I associate with Glasto are tolerance and liberalism (with a small L). So if you are tolerant do you accept views being promoted that aren't liberal and if you are liberal do you accept views that are intolerant?

We have the Leftfield coming back so should we have a Rightfield?

Should there be a place for people to argue that Global Warming isn't really a concerrn?

Not for me. I like the left-leaning radical feel of Glasto. The BNP can piss off and organise their own festival if they want.

The festival has long had political ties with the Left and I don't think anyone should expect this to change.

The festival has thrived in a period where Tory (and conservative with a small c) opinion has dominated day to day governance of this country. If anyone expects the festival to be some kind of nonpartisan entity they are seriously misguided. Much of its success which means the festival survives to this day, has been because of left-leaning political energy which has taken many different forms in the last decades at the festival. For all of us, the festival is a retreat from a world of work and other pressures. For others its a weekend of a lifestyle that in many people's opinion would go along way to solving the world's problems. That's why the Police presence has always been quite offensive to some people. Whilst the political message has been somewhat diluted, the festival still embodies left views, just as it did when CND were supporting the festival and that will never change unless it was to shift itself from Worthy Farm to an urbanised environment

Lets be very clear here that we are not talking at cross purposes and that you have not got the wrong end of the stick from a number of posts..

So are you saying..

a) That band should be allowed to come to Glastonbury and be racist, advocate genocide, talk about kiddy fiddling as acceptable behaviour, That whales should be killed cos they are nice to eat, be sexist and misogynistic, be homophobic, advocate testing on bunnies for make up...whilst on stage....

b ) That bands can come and talk about all the above in serious discussion as highlighting of all the above and the need to stop these things...

c) Let them do what they like as long as everybody has a good time regardless of what is said and left unchallenged

Actually none of the above,

a) Once a band is on stage they can sing/talk about any subject they like, the question is do you decide ahead of time if their 'act' is acceptable. The fact is all venues make this judgement based on their audience, in the case of Glastonbury it is assumed that the audience is pretty 'left' leaning so anyone overtly 'right wing' probably wouldn't be invited, I personally wouldn't mind a different point of view but most wouldn't agree i guess.

I'll just butt-in once more on this one and then i'll butt-out again. Gizmoman said " censorship is the road to totalitarianism" isn't that like saying " having a few beers on a friday or saturday night leads to alcoholism" ? If you drink responsibly and/or appropriately you ought not to become an alcoholic, likewise with censorship of certain inflamotary/extremist veiws/propoganda/images and before you ask "who's to judge what's appropriate?" my answer is - we all are, collectively and individually, I would like to believe/hope that the majority of people on earth ( well at least in glasto anyway ) are well balanced, logical compasionate people interested in the common good - despite the fact that we constantly hear about the exeptions on the news everyday.

I would certainly class myself as libertarian and at the freedom of expression end of the spectrum. I think you can draw a line though between advocating right wing views and advocating illegal behaviour e.g. Child abuse.

Even then the thing which people who are too dogmatic about freedom of expression like gizmorman fail to appreciate is that you can support anyone's right to say anything e.g. I would stand for the right for someone to argue the age of consent for sexual activity should be abolished. It should not be illegal to express these views but the crucial point is that the rest of us reserve the right not to listen e.g. I would not let someone into my house to express those views. Censorship by the state may be the road to totalitarianism but a private festival deciding who it doesn't want on its land is not.

Glastonbury is a festival with a liberal and charitable history and i think Michael Eavis has the right to invite whoever he wants.
