Brilliant episode. The best for a good while...not a lot of time to wrap everything up though, gonna be left with plenty of loose ends, but hopefully enough of an ending to make it seem somewhat satisfactory...

I thought that Ben was pretty much completely out of the loop with Jacob, and who he was though? Had he even ever met Jacob before he killed him?

Ben had no idea that the smoke was Jacob's enemy at all (hence why he believed it when it told him to obey Locke) - so he was just being used by the smoke, not the other way round.

Yeah I know, but could that not be interpreted as a way for smokie to gain Ben's trust and make him think its on his 'side' in order for it to manipulate him later on and kill Jacob?

That's how I see it anyway - in my eyes Ben has gone from an all-knowing master of the island in previous seasons to actually being an ignorant pawn used/manipulated by the others at will.

I don't mind if they don't tie up little things but ben summoned the black smoke in season 4, and considering the focus of season six is jacob and smokey, if that isn't addressed i'll be f**ked off, that's beyond a plot flaw.

He didn't need to get ben's trust though. Ben, during his mindset of killing jacob, did it because fake locke told him to, after he had gone into that cave where alex appeared to him (who we now also know was smokie) and said do what locke says or you're getting killed.

i get that (the top bit), that's established. I was responding to the bit where you said "smokie had to gain ben's trust" in reference to the season four bit. I'm not having it that Ben running into some hidden room in his house, and then the smoke appearing immediately after saving them all from impending doom is a chuffing coincidence.

I don't think it was rubbish at all.

Sure it was a move away from the kind of developments we got in the last episode but that's what I've come to expect from Lost.

I think it was quite interesting:

It shows that Widmore is smokies' enemy, and could be on the same side as Jacob. Though having a geophysicist with him keeps the idea that he is also there to exploit the island. So is he Ben's enemy out of principle, or do they just bare a grudge against each other? And which one (if any) was doing Jacob's work?

It shows that Desmond is actually far more important than previously thought. Why?

It shows that the men who Widmore got to try and kill Ben on the island, work for Sun's father in the alternate timeline, so are Sun's father and Widmore linked in the 'island timeline too?'

I like episodes that raise questions like those.

(I think Sawyer must have a Matthew McConaughey clause that requires him to be topless at least once every episode, but they rarely overtly sexualise any of the female characters)
