I think that was the thing where a lot of closed-minded people and self-proclaimed "music lovers" were outraged that someone headlined who played music a bit different to that which normally gets played, and the same close minded people were left feeling a bit foolish afterwards for not giving the organisers of what is universally acclaimed the best festival in the land enough credit for actually knowing what they were doing, despite having run aforementioned best festival in the land for the thick end of forty years.

Anyway, as the Stones more or less improvise their way through their set (even their most familiar songs aren't played the same way twice two shows on the trot and Keith and Ronnie pretty much make it up as they go along (to, it must be said, diminishing returns over the last few years) they need 5 or 6 weeks of rehearsals to get match fit before playing a show.

Incredibly unlikely, then, that they'd go to all that effort for a one-off appearance.

It doesn't necessarily have to be the biggest ever. There's a lot of hype about but it could be that U2 are the 'big' headliner but Friday is the best night for them inbetween their American dates, so what would be the 'Saturday' headliner are on Friday.

Seeing as you want to enter a more arguementative tone on this forum - what i meant was, the fact that without doubt it as an appauling decision to have jay Z perform as a headliner, and most people from critics to noel gallagher agreed. The festival barely even sold out, which explains why last year Eavis absolutely destroyed the previous one, by having the greatest live performer in the world [springsteen] headline saturday, and one of the worlds greatest songwriters [neil young] headline friday. And eventhough i can't stand Blur, it;s obviously a big deal having such an iconic 90's band reform for glastonbury.

That is what i meant. And being a "Music Lover" (don't worry, i understood the intention by putting that phrase in speech marks/along with closed minded people) i would like to see the same kind of line up on this years glastonbury.

And seriously, if anything, its all the indie bob along ketamine carnage facepainted kids who come on this forum, and pass comment, who are indeed "closed minded" - not that i'm suggesting you are, although that would make a lot of sense!

its not a a question of being closed minded, jay z was awful, eavis knew it, the festival barely sold out, and do you think its a coincidence that he had one of the greatest line ups ANY festival has ever seen the year later? purely to get glasto back on track.

no one felt stupid except the organisers, and they showed that by putting on an amazing festy last year, almost an apology to the fans from the year earlier.

but if you're all up for having an obscure glasto line up, hell lets have take that, megadeth and Jedward on this year - i mean, its not whats typically played, but surely we're all closed minded if we don't want these on?

A couple of people seemed to have mentioned the Jayz headlining decision as awful because Glasto that year 'barely sold out'. In my eyes there's not different degrees of selling out, it's either sold out or it isn't. Doesn't matter if it took 6 minutes to sell out or 6 months, if it's sold out that is the maximum level of success that Michael Eavis can achieve pre-festival. Anyway thats my 2 pence thrown in.

If you want to discuss why 2008 didn't sell out, I have a few other theories different to ONE act, who many people praise Eavis for booking. I certainly did - it was a great move. and yes - I watched him as well. I wasn't too keen on him, but he was certainly no worse than Oasis, the Arctic Monkeys or The Killers who headlined in years previous to that. One of the reasons I didn't like him was that it's not really my kind of music, but at least I got the opportunity to find out first hand for myself, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to have done that.

So why else didn't it sell out? For a start if 2007 wasn't a complete quagmire for the duration of the festival - and this was after a mainly wet 2004 and 2005 - the 2008 festival would have sold a lot quicker. Never underestimate the effects of the weather.

Anyway, I'll leave it there. I - like you - hope to get some positive Stones-related news on this thread. Don't think we'll get any though by the sounds of it...

yep good point, the artic monkeys, and the killers, and even oasis to an extent i would agree are all as bad-a-headliners as jay z. I am truly truly stumped as to who could headline this year.

and by your theory on the weather, last year was pretty great all the way through, so hopefully this one should top that!

Having said that, Leonard Cohen AND neil diamond where there in 08, great moves in my opinion, as diamond was well into his "12 songs" phase at live shows.
