Radiohead

Just my 2p (for what it's worth)...

Having always loved Radiohead but never having seen them until Leeds last year, I was hoping for a few songs that didn't make the setlist ... Creep, Street Spirit, Fake Plastic and Karma Police spring to mind. Despite this, I am a HUGE fan of In Rainbows and I must say I think it is their best album. Having not heard these few 'classics', I was still very very impressed by what I thought was an absolutely fantastic show. They have so many good songs, they can leave all these classics out and still rock a gig in the way they did and leave me feeling like it was the best performance I had EVER seen by ANY band. The lighting setup was nothing short of absolutely awesome!

However ... having recorded the Reading set on Sky+ and then sitting down to watch it, I can't help but be annoyed a few of these classics got an airing there. I ask this ... is it any coincidence that due to the Reading show being televised that they played more classics? I think so! And I had always thought (and still do deep down) that Radiohead are not a band that will ever sell out, but watching them fire out Creep at Reading did bring some doubt to my mind.

I mitigated this by telling myself the Leeds crowd got what the band really, really wanted to play whilst Reading got most of what they wanted to play with a few extra big tunes for the television cameras. I'm happy, I saw a blinding set (the best of my life) and I got to see them do the classics in HD on Sky+.

I would be absolutely amazed if this was the case. Are you suggesting they played Creep to sell more records? Sounds extremely far fetched to me. They are a band at the height of their powers. The sort of stunt you are suggesting would be pulled by a band on a downward spiral, I just dont see radiohead needing to do such a thing at the moment.

The fact they can play 2 differing setlists is to their credit, the vast majority of bands just have one polished setlist per tour. Radiohead have a huge range of songs practiced and perfected that they can play at any time. Rather than any consiparcy theory I think they just play whatever they want when they feel like it.

Firstly, I am NOT slating Radiohead .. they are my favourite band. It is well known that they HATE playing Creep .. why else do you suggest they played it?

No, I don't think they did it to 'sell more records', but I do think they did it for those people at home in their armchairs, why else play a song you hate playing? The only difference between Reading and Leeds was the fact one was televised, the other wasn't. Yes, this came as a surprise to me too!

On your last comment, are you suggesting they don't plan their sets in advance and just turn up and crank out what they feel? If so, then I am sorry but I must say I think you are resoundingly wrong.

It says that they are going back to the studio to carry on recording the new album. Personally i doubt it will be ready until the end of next year. The band are extremely slow in releasing because they take a lot of care over each track. I would guess at a headliner for 2011. I think that Thom might make a guest appearence though with his collaboration band.

I reckon if Radiohead were going to do something it'd be one of the lower down slots, which they could do with minimum fuss and wouldn't require them to confirm themselves early on. Or maybe Thom will do the solo thing if the rest of the band don't want to do it. I'd be really surprised if Radiohead had nothing at all to do with the 40th Anniversary

Better start a

Radiohead for 2011 thread !

I am beginning to think I may never take my Radiohead Quiz to Glato to keep the geeks happy

over the three days when they are only their to see one band !

On a more serious note , they were sublime at Leeds ( not my fave band as I have said many times )

but they totally rode over any set I saw at Glasto this year.

:P

It might be a tough crowd at Leeds (young-uns!) and the freezing night air didn't help, but a whole townsworth of more 'mature' folks turned up for the 'Head and quite a lot of them looked as bored as I felt. I don't want to be needlessly critical as I actually like the band, but I thought the set list was wretched for a headline festival slot: far too many downbeat ambient excursions and 'headspace' music. With so much crowd pleasing material to choose from, it did feel like Thom and co were deliberately avoiding the more 'populist' tunes in favour of what they felt like playing. While I have some sympathy that it must be tedious to be asked to trot out the Big Guns on repeat, I just don't think this attitude works for a festival show. I expected much better.

I saw the set at Leeds and loved it. I am a pretty hardcore fan though. I met Thom after the gig and it was interesting as he thought the gig didn't go that well while others in the band thought it was great. I personally haven't ever seen a bad radiohead gig and have loved them all in their own way. Leeds was awesome, Reading also looked awesome and with a slightly different set list. It wasn't world apart, there were only a few different songs really.

I have a sneaking suspicion we will be seeing them at Glasto. Finger crossed hey!?!?

I will be really dissapointed if i do not see them at Glastonbury or at the least elsewhere in 2010. I quite like the fact that I saw them in 2006 and 2008 and would quite like the two year pattern to continue! :P
