Anyone seen the Harrison doc yet? I've read mixed reviews.

I saw the first hour on HBO the other night but had to go out so that's all i've seen. From that hour it seems like a Beatles fan candy. Lots of great footage and interviews, and obviously the music is amazing. Isn't it almost 4 hours long though? Could see if you're not a massive Beatles fan that it could be a bit drawn out.

Exactly what you said. Too long for Beatle nerds as they've seen a lot of it before and too long for non Beatle nerds as it has to much info in there. And also that it plods along in a directionless manner.

But Ive also read reviews saying its incredible.

So watched Living in a Material World last night. All 3 and a half hours of it.

Its ok. Way too long for something that merely skims on the surface for the most part. No real study of his song writing or songs which is the most disappointing part, sort of alludes to his womanising but mainly focuses on his spirituality and sort of plods along mostly.

Some of the talking heads are good though - Macca, Ringo, the Pythons, Jackie Stewart, Clapton etc and theres enough unseen Beatle footage and photos to make it worthwhile

And yes, George Martin tells the "Well I don't like your tie for a start" story. Again.

Shes worth a lot more than that. She has "shipping money" and her family were backed by the New York mafia, one of the five families. Shes never had to worry about money basically.

Maccas setlists are unlike anything else in modern music. The last 15 songs in Dublin in 2009 are as good as it gets. Never seen the like of it.

As youve heard countless times at this stage chief I reckon "Penny Lane" from that show is one of the most special, most colourful, most vivid moments in all the hundreds of gigs Ive seen.

Think I just realised exactly why it seemed so special... twas all about the context. During the course of the previous ten or eleven songs - 40 minutes of music - Macca brought that crowd down one of the most devine musical paths you can imagine.

It was a route tinged with sadness, melancholy, hinting at the loss of love, friendship and youthful innocence. He touched on the regret at the passing of time and the numbness we experience when confronted with death. There were reminders of the inescapable and universal strength of love.

All this was brought across with a gentle unashamed tenderness that you couldnt help but appreciate... he effortlessly shared with us his pain at the passing of his nearest and dearest.

It was a brave and powerful 3/4 of an hour. It wasnt sombre but you could nearly taste the gravity of the music that was coming at you. It was serious stuff! I distinctly remember nearly losing it during "Here Today"...

But the lonesome path lead to "Drive My Car" - as instant a hit as he ever wrote - and this song sped us off of course towards "Penny Lane", performed with an indescribable joy... I can still remember the wide eyes and mouths of the people in the crowd. It seemed to me a touchstone in the career of this titan. I felt blessed to be there.

Blackbird was the highlight for me.

Cant find "Here Today" from Glastonbury but you could hear a pin drop.

Theres something about one man standing alone in the dark with an acoustic guitar on that stage in front of 80k+. Stripped down, pure music.

Neiler doing The Needle and the Damage done in 2009 was an all time highlight too. Not my favourite Neil Young song but the balls it must take to do that, especially such an honest song about his dead mates.

Because Macca tells a story at his gigs before the song where he went to see Hendrix two days after Pepper was released and Jimi started the show with Sgt Pepper and it blew Macca away. Foxy Lady is his tribute back to Hendrix.

Its the Hendrix gig that Macca, Harrison Townshend, Jeff Beck, Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jack Bruce, Richie Blackmore (and probably every other worthy rock star around* - print the legend!) all went to see.

*Which would of course include The Flying Tigers or some pre Tap Orginals/New Originals/Regulars style version of The Inmates.
