Paul McCartney in '04

As much as I enjoyed this year's festival, the more I look back, the better the Macca set in '04 becomes.

I have honestly never enjoyed a gig so much in my life - it was truly amazing, spine tingler from start to finish, and back before Hey Jude became nausious. I remember the whole crowd walking away to na na na na, and it echoing around the campsite for the rest of the weekend and even at the start of the festival in '05. The crowd was amazing too, very good humoured with lots of shouts for the frog chorus, and when we dragged him back for a second encore, which seemed like it was unplanned (perhaps it was my naiveity), and my did we try for a third encore.

No matter how many excellent sets I have seen since nothing has quite compared. Which is a bit of a let down really, perhaps I could sue Macca for dimishing my enjoyment of live music

I'm no longer in contact with the one freind I was there with, and I don't know anyone else who was there, so don't have anyone to reminisce with - so just needed to get that off my chest

aahh glasto memories how they live with you forever ;)

  • 1 year later...

Dont get excited hes not playing this year!

It wasn't on Youtube so I uploaded Penny Lane from 2004 for those who want to take a wander back through memory lane.

Damn near brings a tear to the eye.

:)

Edit - Fixed the white border and now plays in 720p(ish).

Yep. I'm not sure anything's going to top that set. The best thing I've seen.

It's far enough back and I was drunk enough then that it seems like a dream nowadays. The mood around us was of sheer bliss - random people smiling at and hugging other random people.

As has been mentioned, Hey Jude could be heard all over the site that night.

i nearly missed that. i have never been to keen on the beatles and macca, but as so often at glasto plans go out of the window, and thanks f**k for that. definitely one of the bestest gigs i have ever seen. there are plenty of mass-singalongs throughout the history of glasto, but this was THE one for me, and hearing naaaaaaanaanananananana all over the site for hours and hours will forever stay with me...truly epic

Reading this thread has got me all emotional. A stupidly stupendous night & one of my favourite nights ever. I wasn't really looking forward to it that much, despite liking The Beatles. For some strange reason I had it in my head that he just wasn't right for Glastonbury. Doh!

I mean it was just great singalong song after great singlong song.

SETLIST

From Eleanor Rigby to Live & Let Die (cue fireworks) has to be one of the best runs of tunes it is possible to witness. He gets to Hey Jude and you think it's near the end and he still pulls out another half dozen.

And the crowd. I wandered the field that night & came across plenty of people acting as if it was the second coming or something. I'd never seen people in that kind of reverential awe up close before. I know why they called it Beatlemania now.

And that military strength ticker tape spewing mega fan thing at the end that just seemed like it was never going to stop.

Awesome :D

Wicked post; thanks for this!

I 'returned' to Glasto in 2004 simply for my possible last chance to hear the voice of The Beatles. I'm afraid folks that appears to be the year that started 'it'. Three of us on phones, unable to get even a menu for a solid eight hours. Was unheard of back then for tickets to be such an issue. Had to apply to work there (I'm not that shallow really; was going to work there previous year, honest.) From then on, every year has been the same madness.

I was so damned excited at this gig I can scarcely remember it. This is the only piece of footage (apart from Hey Jude, of course) I've seen since. Great stuff! I do remember, sort of clearing a space around me, 'cause I couldn't help 'singing' along with no small degree of excitement/enthusiasm. Nostalgia ain't ever pointless!
