i love the boss as much as the next guy...i just dont think he put that much effort into the set list...he knew or at least should have known, a large majority of the crowd wouldnt be familiar with his songs, should have done a greatest hits set list.....( i know hes got an album to flaunt, but hes had an album to flaunt for the last 25 years) neil youngs set was just about perfect for me...as was blurs

well, that's kind of 'it' really, isn't it. The punters who weren't impressed would have like him to play for about an hour and a half (like Neil Young), playing mostly his 'hits', which would have been completely unrepresentative of what he does, and would have dissapointed his fans...

so where were we again...??

I don't know what constitutes a 'festival band' then. He went down as well as, and better than most headliners I've seen. KOL were average, Arctic Monkeys were totally overwhelmed by the occasion, Oasis were shit.

If the problem was over-high expectations, then it's hardly his fault.

only missing track for me was The Wrestler. Don't consider myself a "hardcore" Springsteen fan, second time I've seen him (last time was 7 or 8 years ago at Crystal Palace), own Greatest Hits and 7 or 8 albums, love the latest album and Magic. One of the highlights of the summer so far for me, unlikely to be eclipsed, although some great stuff still to come ;)

E-Fest - if I may have the temerity to ask you for roughly 7.5 minutes of your time to watch the ensuing clip and pose the simple question to you - Do you consider this to be a "bland" performance?

yes.

If your answer is affirmative can you attempt to define briefly why it is you find it bland

because it's the most gawd-awful MOR rock; I don't like other MOR rock, so it's not surprising I don't like Springsteen. It's appealing to so many because it works by the lowest common denominator - if you like, to me, it's the music equivalent of a crap TV game show, or it's Westlife.

I assume many other readers of this thread who are familiar with the scope and quality of Springsteen's work will be similarly bemused by your "bland" denigrations.

well, obviously. :)

If they don't think it bland then they won't relate to me thinking it's bland will they?

However, I do find your relentless levelling of the "blandness" tag against the man and his work impossible to comprehend. I fully understand why you may not like him and his music. Even a total contempt I could handle. Fact is many folk I know don't care for the man's music. However, it is your apparently ingrained dogma that he is "the blandest of the bland" that I find incomprehensible.

I'm sure there'll be bands that I like that you'd be similarly dismissive of. That's life, but I can handle it.

I just wish the Springsteen fans could.

if there's one thing I hate in music, it's the notion by singer songwriters that cracked voice + slow ponderous piano chords = meaningful, emotional music that must be taken seriously.

spot on! :)

Just because one person finds something in a particular piece of music doesn't mean that all others have to think the same.

Viva la difference.

I think a major part of him being such a marmite act is that he has a distinct style and song format which he rarely ever deviates from. Thus if you like the style then you are bound to love him because you'll probably like all of his songs, and if you don't like the style then you're bound to hate him.

I know it sounds like I'm stating the obvious, but I think it might explain why there are so many hardcore fans and then so many people that think he is bland.

A bit like Oasis perhaps?

My girlfriend and i went along to see Bruce, purely because of the comments on here saying how amazing live he was and because there was no one else who i felt i must see.

I have very limited experience of him apart from radio/music channels etc.

My experience was to be honest not great, stayed for about 40 minutes, didn't like it.

By this time a steady stream of people were walking away.

I'm not sayin it was crap but just not my cup of tea, we ended up heading of and just having a wander round.

We did a similar thing for Jay Z the other year, Don't particularily like his music but was told he was good live, went along and was blown away, great live show.

Well. I love Springsteen, but really can't understand why no-one's dropping the f*cking argument

Neil (and, clearly, a lot of other people) didn't like him. They didn't find whatever it is we find in springsteen, there's no point trying to, erm, "convert" him. Other people loved him, and that's brilliant for them.

Also, on topic, I found him a bit disappointing :( shame, considering he was my most anticipated of the weekend.

    • Hilarious to describe this as suprising, for the guy who can't afford to go on holiday, the guy who goes on holiday is rich, for the guy who goes on holiday, the guy who gets 3 holidays a year is rich, for the guy who gets 3 holidays, the guy who stays in 5* hotels is rich, for the guy who stays in 5* hotels, the guy that flies business class is rich, for the guy who flies business class the guy with a private jet is rich etc..   I think one of the greens video's that they put out that went viral, Zacks description of "the rich" covered 12 people in the UK.
