Will Glasto 2009 be cancelled?

OK - have you got a linky? I haven't found anything new yet after the WHO meeting yesterday, issued by the government on the matter that specifically mentions any revision or update to their policy concerning public events.

"There's no real governmental support for banning public gatherings as they do little to stop the spread of an infection (if it's going to spread, it will spread anyway), and banning gatherings will have a big impact on the economy and morale."

Yes, that would make a lot of sense. Imagine the negative PR of cancelling a bit charity event like Glasto.

Why does everyone hear there word pandemic and start to think 28 days later....

All pandemic means is that something is present on the majority of continents, not how contagious or deadly something is, Influenza, Measles, Mump.. etc etc are all pandemic contagions.

I'm still wating to die from bird flu when that was the media's favourite shock story of the hour.

Mind you my CJD will kill any x-flu I will come in contact with.

Lets get it into context

There are more deaths through complications of normal seasonal influenza and pneumonia in the UK than swine flu;

Swine flu symptoms are usually mild, and up to now affecting more younger people who have more resistance.

There is probably more to come in the winter when the influenza virus is in higher circulation anyway, but

at the moment as at 11th June (from RCGP pandemic site);

"The current UK figure for confirmed A (H1N1) infection is 750, with significant concentrations in London, the West Midlands and areas of Scotland. The number of UK infections has doubled in the space of a week. As reported by the Department of Health (DH), the majority of cases have not been severe.

that's wrong, there has been.

There is currently absolutely no reason for anything to be restricted at all. In the northern hemisphere, which is coming into summer, the instances of Swine Fever will fall naturally as the atmosphere gets less damp.

In the autumn when the weather changes the instances will increase hugely, and a decision will be taken at that time as to whether any restrictions will be needed (it'll come down to the availability of vaccines and the like at that time).

If people were to spend the same amount of time actually listening to what's being said as they spend making posts about something they don't much bother to listen to then all this scaremongering could be avoided. :P

Flu outbreak at IOW...easy...IOW gets quarantined, noone gets off the island and anyone else suffereing gets sent there too and the festival is forced to carry on all summer to keep everyone entertained?! Only the Prodigy are allowed off the island cos they have to headline the 2nd Stage at Glastonbury...and any Glasto ticket holders have to offer their first born to get off the island and on their way to the Big G to infect the rest of us there...and then Glasto will be quarantined and the festival will have to carry on forever and ever with everyone inside until the risk is over!

WOOHOO!!! I like this plan! Bring on the piggie sniffles! :P

Well, there's the sneezing stage, then the sore throat stage. This is usually followed by the "Staying home and watching Diagnosis Murder" stage, and the "chicken soup" stage.

I can certainly see where you are coming from and quite agree that the information is regularly misinterpreted. In that vein however, my only concern would be a government knee-jerk or PR response that included cancelling certain events (probably only those that don't make fortunes for gambling business and government in subsequent taxes, such as football matches).

Anyway - like most here - I think its unlikely, especially this close to the event.

What I said is from bits and pieces of govt/medical officials that I've seen interviewed on TV in the last 24 hours - it wasn't an explicit statement of the kind "these are the rules for events".

There's actually an advantage in the long run to have swine fever going around at a low level as it currently is, before it hits hard in the autumn, so there's really no reason to think that there's going to be any huge shutdown ... and the rules around infections have been changed now from trying to contain things, meaning that schools no longer have to close if one of their pupils gets it.

There won't be any restrictions put on anything until the autumn at earliest, and probably not then either. We're pretty much all going to get it sooner or later, and there's just about nothing that can be done about that - we might as well all just get it over with.

I'm very much in the anti scaremongering and not worried at all camp ... :P

Paolo999 (a fellow Info Crew member alongside us) is off for Info Training at Worthy Farm this weekend. We can't make it, but on Sunday he'll be picking up information and details of our shifts. I have a strong inkling that the swine flu will scarcely need to be mentioned .... and if so, only for Glasto people just to say they're just keeping an eye on things and little more. That's my hunch anyway, will ask paolo on Monday .....
