but its only been assumed he's headlining because well he's a big act, but so are fleetwood mac & crosby stills & nash and they're all down as strong rumours to play but aren't headlining.

as well as the 2 english 2 american comment i remeber mention of the friday night headliner being a heavier rockier act with more of an appeal to a younger crowd appearing with or without his band, i can only think that was a reference to Jack White (although the racounters aren't big enough to headline)

all the signs at the moment point to neil young playing but not headlining , which is amazing really.

why would he play these two uk dates the week leading up to glastonbury if he wasn't intending to make the trip to worthy farm?

because he's going to be confirmed for the Saturday of Hard Rock Calling (tomorrow I think), which happens on Glasto weekend?

That of course doesn't rule him out of Glastonbury, but the fact he's playing gigs in the week before Glasto doesn't prove him for Glasto.

Neil Young confirmed!!!!

:(:D:D

Glastonbury organisers have today confirmed that Neil Young will be the third headline act at this year's festival, describing his inclusion in the lineup as a "dream come true".

Making official the rumours that the 63-year-old musician would be playing Worthy farm this summer, Glastonbury festival organiser Michael Eavis said: "Neil Young to play this year is a dream come true for me personally. He is one of my all-time favourites and we have always wanted him to play."

In a marked departure from last year's headline act, rapper Jay-Z, Young completes the trio of headliners alongside Bruce Springsteen and the recently reunited Blur. "With Neil on the bill we are close to completing our best ever lineup," Eavis added.

Organisers also announced that Seattle folk group Fleet Foxes will be performing at this year's festival, which takes place in Somerset between 24-28 June 2009. Franz Ferdinand took it upon themselves to confirm their own appearance at Glastonbury 2009 last month.

But it is Young's appearance that has caused the most excitement in Pilton, with Eavis saying: "We give it a go and every year people come to the festival and ask the same question: When is Neil Young playing? So this is big news for us. I've seen him play many times over the years but I think he's better than ever at the moment, it's one hell of a show."

Tickets for Glastonbury festival have now sold out, however, there will be a resale of a limited number of cancelled tickets on 5 April. The Guardian is the official media sponsor of Glastonbury festival. For more information, go to the Glastonbury website.

    • Never too early to start discussing next year’s headliners right?   I’m not attending this year so thought I’d get the ball rolling as I saw Weezer have a new album out in August I’d expect them to do this or Slam Dunk next year. I mean they’re probably too big for this however I think they’re niche enough that they would maybe do it, it just depends on if the fee is a bit out of range for trees.    It’ll be the 20th anniversary next year so I’d expect some throwbacks and hopefully some big headliners/acts. James has already said he’s made a mad booking that you wouldn’t guess & I think he mentioned that he’s spent something like 80% of this years budget of next years top line already on last weeks 2 promoters 1 pod (Don’t quote me on that).    I reckon they’ll try for and get at least two (not all) of the following - Enter Shikari, AFI, Weezer, Sex Pistols Feat Frank Carter, Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls
    • for some reason last night watched series one of Prey on Netflix.   if Legends was written by Timmy Mallet (see above) then Prey seems to have been made by Mr Blobby.   why are all these British crime dramas so sh*t?
    • It'll be all over various Seatfillers based upon previous years at Sandringham
    • The Jayhawks 2026 UK Tour    Sept 15 – Brighton – Corn Exchange  Sept 16 – London – Electric Ballroom Sept 17 – Manchester – Academy 2 Sept 18 – Glasgow – The Garage    For you ‘americana’ lovers. They have a great song book.
    • Weezer just announced a new album & US tour so could add them to the headliner pool. Imagine they’ll do this or trees
