They have just been anounced to headline NME's big gig which was last year headlined by Manic Street Preachers. Considering Manics also got godlike genius which has also been won by a few other radio 1 stage headliners I wouldn't say it is out of the question to for the cure to headline NME stage. I mean Manics new album got to number 2 or 3 in the chart and The cures got to 30 something so If Manics can headline the stage why cant The Cure?

If tradition follows, they're up against the 'Indie' band.

Don't get me wrong, The Cure headlining the Main Stage, nevermind the NME stage, would get me back to Leeds. I'd just be incredibly surprised to see them headlining the tent, especially given stronger time restraints (only getting an hour-ish instead of 2 or 3).

They headlined MOVE in Manchester in 2004. Had to decide between The Cure day and Pixies day. Picked Pixies who played under Stereophonics. Phonics played to about 1/3 of Pixies crowd.

I have seen The Cure 5 times since 2002 and only once not in this country. MOVE was fantastic as only time seen them outside london (pixies night was great as well). I can never imagine them playing in a tent...the following they have can be massive with people travelling from all over europe to see them. I have tickets for the NME big gig and i hope that this award means that their record company might let them play outside of london.

when it comes to size and who is bigger, rammstein or the cure, naturally the cure are bigger in most ways. but with a band like rammstein, their reputation as being a band that can fill a large venue is very healthy. these days I doubt if the cure have that reputation as much as they used to (even though its a given point to many) as they haven't toured the UK properly since 1992 -several dates on the 1996 tour were cancelled- and that counts for a huge amount of people that haven't seen them and only have 'word of mouth' to go on, or footage from Glasto or some dvd's.

I would love to see the cure at reading & leeds. they'd be the biggest band of the weekend.

unless the darkness reform ()

The big gig details were a comment that got swiftly removed from the nme site underneath an article about The Cure. Think they get an hour there.

New albums alright, its the 'happier' songs from the 33 they've produced and I've always prefered them doing the darker, heart aching stuff, so I'm looking forward to that more. Only had time to listen to it once or twice through so far though.

The Cure were one of the biggest bands in the world when they released Disintegration.

They have sold millions of albums worldwide.

Widely recognised as releasing incredible albums like Pornography, Disintegration & Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me.

They've consistantly headlined festivals accross the world. Had their own touring festival in America supported by Interpol, The Rapture, Mogwai & Muse amongst others.

If you don't think they could headline Reading/Leeds when over the last few years I've been at the festival with headliners of...The Darkness & Razorlight (surely the worst headliners in recent memory) Neither of which have a strong pedigree, then you are mistaken.

Still, I think they are more likely to play Latitude.

Well then; if the band are willing to take the cut to an hour from their regular 2/3 hour sets; surely they would consider an hour long set; the now typical length of time for an NME headliner, at Reading/Leeds?

NME Awards tour announced tomorrow - will get a few names for next year's line up from that. Justice, Crystal Castles, Foals and Late of the Pier would be good - got a feeling Glasvegas might play though.

Your exact words were; "I'd just be incredibly surprised to see them headlining the tent, especially given stronger time restraints (only getting an hour-ish instead of 2 or 3)."

That's what I'm commenting on. Their relative size these days and the fact that they're willing to one hour sets indicates that they could headline the NME tent.

Once upon a time yes. You are obviously a fan of the band so are bound to be biased, I have no opinion on their music so am completely objective and can honestly say there is a lot more chance of them headlining the NME stage than the main stage. And Razorlight played of the back of a number one single and album, something the Cure haven't had in years. You're right about them being more likely to be at Lattitude though.

"That doesn't imply that I thought they wouldn't do a 90 mins or less set. Just that they'd want to play for longer.

I'm starting to think I might be really out of touch with the festival demographic. Makes me feel old."

What you said implies that you thought they would play if they got only an hour set. Which isn't the case. And so obviously they don't want to play longer; they'll take what their offered (money speaks volumes - doesn't it?)

How come you think you're really out of touch with the festival demographic? Because The Cure aren't headliners anymore? Or, are you having a dig at me?

NME Awards Tour: Glasvegas, Friendly Fires, White Lies, Florence & the Machine - dates on NME - safe to say that Glasvegas will headline NME tent next year; with Friendly Fires high up. Poor line-up; Friendly Fires the only good one.
