Hey everyone!
My friend and I are heading over from Sweden to Tramlines this summer. We had our eyes on a bunch of different festivals in the UK, but since most of them sold out before we even knew if we’d be able to make the trip, we finally settled on Tramlines. Why Tramlines, you might ask?
Well, because we’re absolutely crazy about British music, and finding a festival like this (where you also don’t have to camp, a huge plus) made it impossible not to buy a ticket. The fact that I’ll also get to see The Enemy after beeing a fan for 19 years didn’t hurt either.

 

Since the app doesn’t work over here… is the Clashfinder schedule 100% accurate?
What’s the venue like, and what does the map look like?
Which sides of the stages are best to stand on?
How long does it take to walk between stages?
What are the prices usually for food and drinks?
Is it easy to get to the festival from town?
And is it easy to get back into town?
Is it allowed to walk around with a beer anywhere in the venue, or are there those stupid fenced-off bar areas?
As you can tell, I need all kinds of info, so please share your best tips and tricks to make this the best festival experience possible.

I'm sure someone can update you on the clashfinder, and it will be pretty accurate by the time the festival comes around. It's a large flat-ish arena with main stage in the open air, no best side I'd say. Leadmill (3rd stage medium tent) is at the back of the main arena, T'Other (2nd stage big tent) 5 min walk round the corner. At full capacity walking around can take a bit more time though. I noticed that The Enemy are scheduled to not fully overlap with Wolf Alice, so you could catch part of their set too.

 

You can walk around anywhere with a beer, with most bars the usual mass market stuff, but one nice craft ale tent, back of the arena near the Leadmill stage. A main meal will set you back £10-15, but cheaper snacks also available. Expect a pint to be £7-8. Possibly a bit more this year as prices everywhere are increasing.

 

It's fairly easy to get to from the town centre using the tram, although can be busy at peak times / very busy at curfew. If you like a walk, it's approx 40 mins to Kelham Island (lots of indy venues) and probably an hour to the city, or catch an Uber. There will be loads of 'fringe' music events on around the city right through the weekend. Most are free. Have a wonderful trip, enjoy the festival, and your stay in our city!

One thing to note, if you care about such things, the bars in the main arena have, for the past few years, just sold beer/cider in 440ml cans. If you want a proper poured pint, you need to go to the ale tent or the bar closest to the entry point. Small thing, but if I'm paying festival prices for a beer, I'd at least like a proper pint, not just a tin can I can get in a supermarket.

Do you think we may get any surprise guests like the Mcfly year? Just think one hour between Vaccines and Kaiser Chiefs is long for the MainStage.

Just realised it’s the same on all days, hour gaps between sets, sure it was only half hour last year

This is part of why I've stopped going to Tramlines. It feels like they keep banking on their regular local audience showing up year after year and so they've been saving money by booking fewer and fewer acts. We're a long way from the days when even big acts like Doves and Peter Hook were programmed in the Leadmill Stage.

The bigger gaps became really noticeable last year. What really annoys me this year is that despite this, Main Stage and Leadmill have a bit of overlap - this has never happened before IIRC. Also the trend towards putting Leadmill DJ sets early afternoon on T'Other. The latter is definitely cost-cutting. The scheduling gaps are also possibly an attempt to increase food and beverage income. It's always about money, one way or the other!

I've been watching some vlogs on youtube to get a grip of the festival and i'm really excited! The crowd seems to be very great. But thats not really a surprise. Every time i've been to a concert in UK the crowd has been mental.

Haha, very glad you mentioned Wolf Alice and The Enemy since that was the possible clash i worried about the most. I did see Wolf Alice here in Stockholm back in November last year and they were phenomenal. They blew my expectations out of the roof. And i really wanted to see them in England and now since they're not fully clashes with The Enemy i definitely will!

If you enjoy Courteeners, that's a set you won't want to miss. Say what you will about their music (I'm personally a big fan), but they consistently draw an excellent crowd. So long as you don't mind flairs!

Yeah i will definitely see them! Been listening to them on and off since 2008 so it's about time! Maybe not the best band music wise IMO, but they have a couple of bangers for sure. 
And flairs? LOVE IT!

I'm picturing lads from Stockholm turning up in 1970s bell bottoms. I think it's "flares" that the Courteneers crowd will have. They are a throwback, but more to noughties indie landfill, not 70s rock.

 

I drove from Scotland to attend Tramlines last year, it did feel a bit like a Pulp gig with some support bands (big gaps between acts being on stage, as noted). Got a taxi there and afterwards walked down through the local area, went to a wee beer shop that had a bar, went to another bar, caught a still quite busy tram. Went to a bar/club called Sidney and Matilda.

They were on T'Other stage, it's just back then T'Other stage was on the main field. 

 

They switched them after COVID and moved Leadmill into the main field.

I wouldn't bank on it. Blossoms are more likely to want to play their new stuff alongside the old favourites.

Friday fringe event in the city centre

With The K's headlining the T'Other Stage this year are they the first act to do all three stages (Main, T'Other & Leadmill) since it moved to Hillsborough Park.

Hoping a sheffield local can help

 

I've been to tramlines a few times with my daughter but just for the day,this year decided to go for the weekend as she starts uni this year so it could be the last time....went kendal calling last year but the storm on the last night put us off

 

Anyway..we booked an air bnb 10 minutes walk from the festival but unfortunately they've cancelled on us

 

Got another air bnb today but it's in woodseats...what would be the best way to get back after the festival..i was thinking uber but i've since read they can be a nightmare after the festival

 

We only live in goole so i know from past experience it's hard work after the festival getting anywhere

 

Would we be better finding a pub after and waiting,or maybe leave early and get a tram to the centre and go to the fringe again

 

The only headliner we want to watch is wolf alice so happy to leave early but when do trams normally get too busy or stop?

Get a tram into the city, then get an Uber from there. You could even stop by at some fringe events if you have any energy left. Trams run late, very busy after curfew. Sunday curfew is earlier, so you could even explore bus options - the First app does journey planning

I think we'll definately leave before the headliners and go to the fringe saturday as not for us....is there anywhere that opens late on the sunday?

 

I've seen a couple of after partys fri and sat but not sun...and i'm too old to be at anything other than sunday if i have to do it all again the next day!

Sunday will be less options for sure. Someone's compiled a fringe clashfinder... no idea how accurate it is, but might be worth a look.

Finally caved in and got myself a weekend ticket. There's loads on Tixel if anyone is still thinking about it. Better start planning a schedule!

Did you get your ticket straight away?

 

I bought some cheap vip upgrades from them but saying not available still

I expect them to come in a day or two once the credit card payment is showing on my bank. They are usually week before for Tramlines, and for Tixel buys they issue a whole new ticket. So don't panic just yet!
