Mobility scooter ordered

I feel abit sad tbh. I know it’s the right thing to do though. I had a femoral vein burst in my leg twice last week on top of the cancer I have! My leg is blooming killing me but on every ward round I’ve said “I’m going to Glastonbury in six weeks”

And not one doctor has said no you’re not they seem quite impressed. Anyway I will have to get the pain relief sorted and go to physio rehab for a week or two but I’m determined to be there. Is this scooter a hinderence or a blessing. I honestly didn’t know the festival hired them for £35 and I’m too late now off site they are £450 but I have no choice.

here’s to a good one for us all. You never ever really know what’s around the corner that’s for sure xx

I hired one for the first time in 2022 and it was an absolute blessing! I was volunteering with Oxfam so it enabled me to get easily from Spring Ground to Oxfield and then to the Accessible Arrivals Tent at Gate A where I was positioned on my shifts. This year will be my 4th year of hiring a scooter, I honestly don't know how I coped before. I have osteoarthritis in both knees and balance issues.

Lets hope the weather is kind as I have never hired a scooter on a wet year, but I would think as long as you stick to the paths metal walkways it should be fine. I certainly have been able to visit places on the site that I hadn't been to in years.

Are you already in booked into Spring Ground? The scooter will need to be charged for a minimum of 8 hours every night. Do let them know that you are now taking a scooter.

Get well soon!! 🦼

No I’m embarrassed to say I’m in Love Fields so will use both. I could never have foreseen the bleed. What do you do if you want to park up say if you were at the pyramid but wanted to walk in about to have a dance where do you put it? Are people bothered by them.  It will get delivered the night before the company sound like the work with the festival.

keep your tips coming! I don’t even drive in real life.

Can you charge it in Love Fields? It's quite a hike to and from Spring Ground if not. There is a charging tent in E21 East Forward Accessible Campervan Field, this is next to Love Fields so you could always ask the Accessible Team to use this area to charge it. Maybe get one of your group to take it there and walk back?

I put loads of battery fairy lights on mine, because you are lower that the average persons line of vision they don't notice you. A head torch is also a good idea, and I have a horn that I remove before returning my scooter.

Expect people to stupidly run in front of you ALL the time. I have clipped a few as the brakes or easing off the throttle are not that responsive. I even had one person walk diagonally in front of me after a vehicle crossing gate was lifted, no idea what he was thinking but I hit him full on. He then tried to get sympathy from everyone around and called me bad driver, they all sided with me so he limped away looking sheepish.

Make sure you take the keys out if you leave it anywhere. Did you request access to the Viewing Platforms? They can easily and safely be left as there is a lot of space below the actual platforms, likewise the lock ups. It is requested that you take a chair and walk onto the platforms if you use them to save space.

Feel free to ask anything that concerns you. 😊

expect people to be assholes and clamber all over you & the scooter like you're not there!

also use the battery power carefully . i ended up with a flat battery on the Saturday night and couldn't go out.

This happened to me in Elton John, until a couple of blokes who knew how to handle people took pity on me. Two soon became four and I had a "bouncer" on each approach to my mobility scooter. They ensured nobody pushed past anywhere near me. Georgia May Jagger, coked up to the eyeballs was not impressed when was forced to walk around me instead of through me. These four wonderful humans turned a very negative experience into a very positive one. 🥰

Agree with what everyone has said. There are some a***holes, but most people are great. One lad jumped on the back and flipped me over - his mates were great though - helped me out and are probably still shouting at him now. You can charge your battery at most of the platforms, so get a top up at each performance and you might manage without nighttime charging.

Remember - stay on the road, keep clear of the moor (and beware of the moon)

I volunteer on the in for points - we’re able to let you charge mobility scooters. You just need to bring your charging cable. The property lock ups should also be able to charge medical devices including mobility scooters. If that helps / you need a top up round site.

thanks for those there's also the viewing platform where you can charge, the worst thing is the time charging takes, much better if you can charge while you sleep.

Well I ended up

buying a second hand one as it was the same price as renting one. I have two weeks to get on top of the pain. I haven’t even walked outside yet!! So, talk me through it. If I want to go and see Alannis Morrissette at the pyramid. How do I get to the viewing platform with it? I won’t be using the viewing platform will probably be at the front of it. I have loads of stitches from the op so I’m concious of getting them knocked. Shall I just spend this Glastonbury on the peripheries? Will people be peed off if I get off it to sit on my chair?

Getting to the lower Pyramid Viewing Platform can be difficult. There are no walkways so you have to cut through the crowd, hence a lot of users get a spot and remain there. If you want to be there for a certain set I would suggest getting there and watching the previous act, I would also suggest going further back.

People can be very kind to mobility scooter users, they also can be very selfish so don't be surprised if you get knocked, pushed aside or even people attempting to take a short cut over your scooter when you are in it. The front of the platform is a very busy area and I suggest you reconsider using the platforms if you are recovering from an operation.

I have my own scooter but because the clearance is very low I hire at Glastonbury. See my quoted post below with lots of advice.

Ask away if you have more questions 🙂

The main thing to consider is the ground clearance, I own my own scooter but hire at Glastonbury as the clearance is 38mm. This is my own - https://pride-mobility.co.uk/discontinued-en-uk/go-go-elite-traveller-sport/

This is similar to the model I hired last year which as you can see has pneumatic wheels, it also has suspension and a ground clearance of 70mm. https://1ststepmobility.com/product/tga-vita-e/

As its mainly farmland with some metal walkways the terrain is uneven and prone to boulders and rocks on the paths. Its pretty hard work at times so you will get an upper body workout just steering it. Charging for a minimum of 8 hours overnight is imperative, should you forget to you will quickly run out of power the next day.

You may need to lower your expectations and be realistic about where you can get, if a place is already thronging it's a good idea to quit before attempting to get in. If there is a band you really want to see get there early and find a place further back because if you go too far forward you won't get out until the set finishes.

You need to make yourself seen and heard, battery operated fairy lights, a head torch and a decent horn. This is the one I have, it easily attaches to the handle bars. https://hornit.com/products/db140 You also need a loud voice to say excuse me constantly! People don't see you and be prepared for them running in front of you. I have clipped a few in my years of using a scooter, always the fault of the pedestrian never mine!

Shout out if you have any further questions! 🙂

I'm truly sorry to hear about the difficult time you're going through, and I admire your determination to attend Glastonbury despite everything you've faced. From my experience and what I’ve seen from others, a mobility scooter in a festival setting like Glastonbury can absolutely be a blessing rather than a hindrance—especially when mobility is limited and managing pain is crucial. While it’s unfortunate that the on-site hire option is no longer available, having your own scooter gives you more freedom, flexibility, and independence. Just make sure to plan for charging and accessibility in advance. Wishing you strength in your recovery and a wonderful time at the festival—you've certainly earned it.
