Anyone got a Circus or Walkabout act they could put on? Even if not, it makes for interesting reading with the fees for each type of show.

Glastonbury Arts Commissions

Glastonbury Theatre and Circus Fields are commissioning seven new shows for Glastonbury Festival 2024. Glastonbury Arts Commissions is seed money for performers who are ready to perform their own work.

We are looking for new experiences and shows for our audiences that are spectacular and brave, and that work well with the creative atmosphere and scale of the festival.

Subject to funding, shortlisting will take place in the first week of February 2024 and we will reply to all applicants as soon as possible with successful candidates being told no later than 21 February 2024.

We utilise the massive infrastructure of the festival to present these shows. We mentor the selected commissions in planning and creation before and during the festival. We also support you in bringing the show to other audiences after Glastonbury.

Commissions

1. Outdoor Show (£4,500*)

For an outdoor interactive/participatory installation to run throughout the four days of the festival. It could be installed for the festival’s duration, set up each day, or even with no set-up, and be as weatherproof as possible. A large part of the audience should be able to participate (upwards of 100 per day).

2. Outdoor show or installation (£4,000*)

For an outdoor show to run throughout the four days of the festival. It could be installed for the festival’s duration, set up each day, or even with no set-up, and be as weatherproof as possible.

3. Outdoor ground show (£3,250*)

For a street theatre show to be performed for 3 days of the festival. It should be able to run for 2 x 45-minute slots per day, but the performance timings should be tailored to the piece while making the best use of the opportunity to play with and to our audiences. This show will have to work in wet weather.

4. Walkabout (£1,500*)

For a walkabout show to be performed for three days of the festival. Walkabout is 2 x 45-minute slots per day and should be tailored to make the best use of the opportunity to play with and to our audiences. This show will have to work in wet weather.

5. Large-Scale Circus Show (£6,000*)

For a large-scale circus show for the Circus Big Top to be performed on three to four days of the festival. It should have at least 3 performers, be at least 30 minutes long, and contain a high skill level. The budget should include lighting and sound design. The show should also be shown before the festival. We will provide you with a directorial outside eye on this commission and production skills mentoring.

6. Small Circus Show (£2,000*)

For a show for three to four days of the festival in the Circus Big Top. It should be between 8 and 15 minutes in duration, contain a high skill level, and be able to have an impact on the 1,000 + audience that will see it.

7. Small Circus/Street Show (£2,000*)

Good news all round. The acts need a freshen up and it shows that there’s additional funding available to the fields.

It sounds encouraging, I love the walkabouts but they could certainly do with a refresh.

I do hope the seagulls don’t get culled though.

As much as I love the T&C fields as one of my favourite areas of the festival. I also feel that it needs a refresh for regular visitors. Some of the acts/artistes have been performing pretty much the exact same sets for years.
