Why would it be the same if higher taxes were being imposed on the same brand elsewhere?

It's a minimum price per unit of alcohol. If it's already above the minimum unit price in England, then the minimum unit price in Scotland and Wales won't force the retailer to charge more.

Oh, I see - I think, anyway. So, the minimum unit price is the same whether it be England, Scotland , or Wales? It's a constant across the board?

Because it brings the price UP of lower priced alcohol only. Stuff that is more expensive than the minimum isn't effected.

I guess it means you're as well to buy higher quality booze as the gut rot is priced high anyway.

It has had some unintended consequences (as all political tinkering does):

There’s a wee bit more to the minimum unit price legislation though. Whilst all the above posts are true/accurate, the bit that’s often missed, yet a real pain, is that it’s also now against the law in Scotland to promote alcohol quantity.... so buy one get one free, or 4 for the price of 3 type offers are illegal. In short, you are not allowed to offer discount for buying more.

So, there's to be a vote on whether to continue with this policy, this coming May. Or, is that just a rubber stamping exercise? I have no idea.

Probably rubber stamping, the legislation was intended to affect the neds drinking buckfast and cheap cider but they are still sitting in the parks knocking it back as much as usual. Don’t know what the government thought would happen, did they reckon the alkies would then all sit in wine bars quietly drinking Pimms ?

Yes, the very nature of alcoholism is that most alcoholics can't stop drinking, unless incarcerated / incapacitated in some other way. Maybe I am missing something, but this does seem like a tax on the poor only.

Ended up with 5 boxes of Weston’s - east drinking cider that and great value for the money paid. Will freeze well and then act as a cooler for lots of other things too and will be easy to dispense at the campsite

Picked up 4 boxes of westons from tesco for £6 each today - bangin value

also stonking value was 10x 440ml cans of stowford press for £6.50. 65p a can! Not exactly premium but you cant argue for that price.
