Re: the Architects album…

I posted this elsewhere but I’ll put it here too in the interest of discussion:

Had a full listen to this last night and it’s better than the half listen I did yesterday morning.

I think the opening track is great and I would say around half the tracks on this are genuinely good, including some of the singles which I wasn’t feeling without the context of the whole record. It’s certainly better than the last album (a career worst, for me) and the good tracks are amongst the best they’ve done since Holy Hell. The highs are higher than most of FTTWTE and the lows aren’t as low as the previous record, including that BMTH-lite, wetter single I slated earlier in the week (even that sounds alright in context of the album).

I think it really lulls in the second half, though, with most of the tracks being able to pass for anything this band has done since Holy Hell.

It’s a much better album than the previous one but, to me, in a a lot of places, they’re still struggling with their identity just as much as on that record. Tracks like Judgement Day and Brain Dead just don’t sound like Architects at all and it’s clear they’re trying other things but I don’t think they pull them off well at all.

Brain Dead especially. To me, that is one of the naffest songs on the album because it sounds so out of place, not just on this album, but in their entire discography. It reminded me of when Fall Out Boy brought out that ‘punk’ EP Pax AM Days about a year after Save Rock and Roll. ‘Look at us, we can do something ‘harder’ and faster’. The problem was, it sounded just as poorly executed as the ***** I took issue with on SRAR, just in the other direction.

The guitar tone on Brain Dead is absolutely horrible, too. It sounds so false and static-like. It really irritated me when listening to it.

I think Sam is the star of the show on this album; an album that is dominated by pretty horrible, over-sanitised, soulless sounding production (Cheers, Jordy F).

Overall, I think this is a proper 6/10 album. The songs I like (which is about half the album), I will continue to listen to. The rest, I don’t need to listen to again. Half a great album, half a really bland, unenjoyable, identity-lacking muddle.
