Maybe he did or maybe he didn't? who will ever know?

At the end of the day they will come and conquer, i have no doubt about that they are a band who have wanted to play and will play with all their hearts.

I wonder if they will have the big bouncy beach balls?

Thing is, the mega-band approach sorta happened after the Jay-Z year when tickets didn't sell out until the day and Eavis got panicked. Without wanting to sound like a Metallica hater, that they're headlining and the festival still sold out handily pretty much proves that that is no longer an issue. I can see a return to pre 2007 festivals where mega-bands were only booked when it happened to work out that way. And hopefully that'll see the headliner budget filter down a bit (which wouldn't have happened this year if money was being kept aside for Prince until it fell through) .

I wouldn't say they were desperate. I can think of a fairly decent list of bands who would have the potential to headline, with quite a few being mentioned here. They're not to everyones taste, certainly not all to my taste either, but they are headliners. Of course, some of these bands that we are thinking of may have turned down Glastonbury numerous times before and are now crossed off the potential headliner list on the Eavii fridge.

Metallica are a brave booking, that doesn't make it a desperate one. I think it'll be interesting to see how big the crowd is as a lot of festival people in to that genre of music would've planned to go to somewhere like Download or Sonisphere.

I'll be the first to admit I'm disappointed by all 3 headliners, but I know I'll still enjoy myself so I got over it pretty quickly. I respect the risk they are taking with Metallica. I'm sure it'll pay off.

Indeed. Biggest selling rock act could also be translated as the most commercial.

I think it is a good booking. Anything that shakes up preconceptions about what the festival offers can only be a good thing, particularly when you look at the accusations that Glastonbury has become a middle class festival.

The door has clearly been open for heavier acts in recent years, QOTSA's storming 2011 headline other stage set being a fine example. I'm hoping for Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and others to grace the farm in the coming years, myself.

not in the same way as you were "desperate" to get a ticket! in my opinion, Metallica are an absolutely massive booking, something out of the ordinary that could only ever be pulled off at the biggest music festival known to mankind! keep up the good work Michael, no band that have ever graced that pyramid, have ever come even close to being as big as the festival itself!

what makes me laugh is all these metallica haters whining on about how they havnt released anything good in years......first of all false, death magnetic was a good return to form.....2nd you didnt moan when it was the fucking rolling stones did you??? really fed up of this thing where because its a metal band they get twice as much flak as anyone else, I know its a cliche but fuck the haters no room for that kind of narrow mindedness at glastonbury, you dont want to give metal a chance, fine....be bored to tears my mr bugg and co haha more room for the rest of us but quit your damn whining! dont make it go north pole on your asses!

Agree ,,,they will be awesome. They've delivered every time I've seen them at Glasto and Eez Eh will probably be the anthem of the festival. Likewise, whilst I felt Arcade Fire were disappointing in 2007, they have matured and now have an awesome repertoire.

I know lots of people.........and I really do mean lots, who have been going to Glastonbury for years (and their children, many who are now adults, so a pretty wide spectrum of ages) and it seems that maybe 10% of them are going to go and watch Metallica.
