Northern Soul

Any spots of northern soul on the line up / self confirms? I don't really know much about it, but I've been listening to this lot for a while and i'm really hoping they come to G. Would be good in the late night ska - type slots that go on around the site.

Northern Soul refers to the 'motown' scene in the North West in the 60's rather than northern soul bands. The likes of Stevie Wonder, Four Tops, The Temptations etc.

There is Daptone Super Soul Review and Vintage Trouble both on West Holts that have that kinda vibe.

My mate plays with Smoove and Turrell & he mentioned earlier in the year that they may be playing Glastonbury. They've played a few times, last was in 2010 I think at the Pussy Parlure. Unlikely that they'd be on the main announcements so they be announced.

New album out next week by them, give them a listen.

Saw Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings on Friday, and they were stunning. They're the main part of the Daptone Super Soul Review , and I would recommend them to anyone, but they certainly have more of the James Brown vibe than what most people would consider Northern Soul

I love Northern Soul. My parents were mod revivalists, so I grew up listening to it. Yeah, it's obscure soul music, and one of the few styles that's named after where it was played as opposed to where it originated. Never seen many northern soul names playing live at Glasto. I seem to remember seeing Northern Soul all-nighter discos though.

For a crash course in Northern Soul I recommend watching the movie Coast to Coast (literally the only good thing that Lenny Henry has been a part of).

Some good descriptions of Northern Soul here. No-one mentioned it's also a great label to bump the price of a vinyl up by £20! ;)

Although I prefer more classic soul and funk to 'Northern Soul' I do love the dancing. I'll be keeping my eye out for anyone spreading talc on the dancefloor.

    • I read the Kerrang review and they didn’t seem overly positive. The definition of a 6 out of 10.
    • Interesting the stat guys say 3 points and -3 goal difference is where it gets to 50/50 territory in terms of going to the last 32. If Scotland lose their last 2 at best they are on -1, play like they did yesterday and they could take a heavy loss.   However thinking about it positively get 4 points from the last 2 games and the group is won! Have heard a few saying Scotland should just park the bus next 2 games, but not sure they have the players to do it. From my perspective they could really do with a decent defensive midfielder to add balance, but not sure if they have one in the squad. They also need significantly more from Mctominay who I thought was poor, but understand he has been unwell.
    • Yup and they aren't all going to get them, some are going to miss out. Speaking of this, I met someone at RIP who went to RFP and his view was band wise it's value for money but it wasn't a festival itself he'd be rushing to return to. In fairness as well he probably liked more of the headliners there than me this year whereas I was more undercard and he wasn't returning.
