Tent size?

Wondering what size tent people would recommend for 3 people?

I've been looking at 5/6 man tents for three of us. That should be enough for us and our rucksacks and booze etc and hopefully still have enough room to sit in the highly unlikely event that it rains.

A friend always says when judging tent size double the number of people going and thats what berth you should have. Depends how cosy you want to be/how much stuff you are going to take.

For example: I have a large 5 berth with porch. In previous years we have fit 6+ people in it to sleep. However when my OH and I took it camping, it felt small.

I have used the three man for myself only the past few years and this year I'm bringing a larger one

When you are cold, tired & wet you will want a little comfort in a tent at night

The 'official' advice you'll get from camping suppliers is that a two man tent sleeps one, a three man sleeps two, a four man sleeps three, etc. I think for three people and all their kit you should get a five-man with a porch, to allow extra space for kit (although obviously pack as light as you can, there's nowt more uncomfortable that having to sleep with your head on a crate of beer or a pair of muddy wellies!)

That said I don't think people should take the piss. We've seen folks who have two of them in an eight-man family behemoth... slightly OTT (and bloody heavy to carry!)

There are 4 of us going (my OH, my son & his GF) and we are taking a 6 man & a 4 man, with 2 of us in each tent.

The 6 man will be used to keep booze, food, wet weather gear etc in as it has 2 bedrooms - keeping dirty/wet clothing away from clean stuff is a must.

There's three of us and we're taking a two man and a large 3 man with a porch, one person will have the 2 man and the other two in the big tent with most of our kit in the porch.

I think having a massive tent to yourself must be quite cold at night.

Picture this:

Thursday morning 5am. You have finished half the booze you intended to drink over the entire 5 days last night. The rain sun is beating down and your two mates are surprisingly chirpy. All you want to do is die/sleep. They are clattering round you in this tent you're sharing. Sound like fun?

Monday morning 8am. You get up ready to go and look at this behemoth tent you've bought (presumably together). Now you've obviously spent as little as possible on a cheap tent from Halfords hundreds of pounds on a 5-man tent that will last you many festivals. It may also have a little mud on it. You're hungover. You want to get to your own bed. What will happen to this tent?

My advice. Spend a little(not too little) bit of money on a 2 man tent each that will probably last a few festivals. Easy to disassemble at the end, light to carry and you get your own bit of peace and quiet at the end of the night. Also, if there is some slightly inclement weather, 3 tents are better than 1 - if one gets ruined 2 of you could share at a push, or get another from cosy camper.

If you do get a pop up though - Do practice putting putting it away!

You don't need 'a tent for your stuff'. How much 'stuff' are you intending to bring?

Mr P&P and I manage quite nicely in a 3-man with a porch for us and our 'stuff'. Remember that the free luggage lockups will look after pretty much anything you want - sack trucks, bikes, big rucksacks, valuables... The more tentage and the more stuff you bring, the less likely you are to want to lug it all home again.

The other thing is, its handy to have the porch in emergencies. I think at about half the festivals I've went to, someone has needed to sleep in the porch, either cos they are too wasted or because their tent wasn't up to much.

I'm taking a 3 man for 3 of us. Not too worried that it won't fit us, since we are coming from overseas I am taking a good tent with me on the plane. We are planning on putting everything in the lockups except the booze/clothes we need for that day and food. We will just camp near a lock-up and pick up stuff from it as we need it.

I go alone and I've got a choice from a 1 man, 2 man, 4 man and 8 man ranges of tents that I already own.

Taking the 4 man as its got a porch (for wets and muds) and the sleeping area for everything else. When I took the 2 man (2010?) it was too crampped.

I like to live like a pig all week and only clear up at the end. Having the small tent annoyed me.

Incidently for other festivals this year, I'm taking the 4 man for me + child and the 8 man for me + child + teenager.

I am taking a Vango Icarus 500 for two of us I didn't realize how big it was when I brought it as I previously had an Alpha 350 before and found it cramped for 2 people . So my logic was to get up the full 5 man

I'd say that despite it's size its not overly big for two, plenty of room and the porch if you got others camping nearby to come sit in ..Plus standing height makes getting up and dressed of morning so much better:P

You'd fit another person + stuff in easy, but after that I'd think it would start getting cramped tbh!

So i'd say on that limited experience, it breaks down like:

2 Man = 1 person + Stuff cozy

3 Man = 1 person + stuff comfortable or 2 people + stuff cozy

4 Man = 2 People + Stuff comfortable

5 Man = 3 People + Stuff comfortable

I personally prefer a 3 for myself. I use a Vango Alpha 300...

...have used 2 men tents and they are fine, just prefer a bit more for Glastonbury although because I am flying will probably be a 2 man.
