Ang Lee's Hulk was mind numbingly awful, but that was made before Disney owned Marvel

I thought Louis Leterrier's The Incredible Hulk was all right and definitely better than Star Wars Episodes 2 + 3

Iron Man 1 + 2, Thor and Captain America weren't exactly Citizen Kane but they were funny, well shot and good action.

Avengers was great

A few months ago George Lucas wanted to remake the original three Star Wars in 3d, and everyone said he was an idiot and should leave Star Wars alone. Now he has no more control and a company which had proven their ability to make great films for 100 years has taken over, how on earth can anyone be against this?

While George Lucas not directing or writing any more Star Wars films is a good thing, he should still be involved in the production. I'm not sure Disney will do any better, especiaily after the mess of John Carter (of Mars), and they're just as likely to milk the franchise dry as Lucas was doing. Those shitty mobile phone adverts (Vodafone?) are just the tip of the iceberg.

As for Marvel, the films are good for what they are - 3D explosion-filled popcorn fests. I'm not sure that they should be held up as a good example of what the next three Star Wars films could be like.

The Iron Man films are great and the 3rd looks fantastic. The Avengers is great too. I tried to look at Thor but had to turn it off. Awful stuff.

I just hope they keep the Star Wars darkness a la Empire Strikes Back. Glad Lucas isn't writing them though.

That was my point - Lucas wasn't really interested in the darkness with the prequels and neither will Disney be. The Marvel films may be good but they aren't dark, they're family fun for trips to the cinema and then to load up on merchandise, and the prospect of Star Wars going even further in that direction than Lucas took it isn't exactly an enticing one.

Its really not though is it.

This is about Disney seeing an opportunity to take over (and exploit) an IP for financial gain. Art has nothing to do with it. Imagine how many awesome films could be made for $4bn - or they could lazily buy a cash cow that they can exploit in their stores, theme parks and movie theatres.

One only has to visit Disneyland to see what disney do to things.

I like it, Marvel have done well since the Disney take over...The Pixar sequels have been great! (and Brave was meant to be good for the market, it was going for ..)

I see big potential for another 3 great films, though the next 3 seem to have been written/at least the outline story by George Lucas already...So i suppose that's the new republic coming into play.

Sure Disney will milk all the tie in's, merch and theme park rides they can...but if it gets us more proper Star Wars films like the Marvel films then great! The Star Wars films have never really been about pushing art or film making, they are just fun action movies, with a brilliant mythology that has led to many "normal" people being able to get involved in that universe.

I can see the new Star Wars being briliant, if you think about how many people love the brand and have their own ideas about what to do with it and have now grown up to become directors and screen writers as that is one of reasons why the Marvel films work as they given the writer/director jobs to people who were fans of the characters even if they aren't successfull in the mainstream like Joss Whedon.

That's an exceptionally good point that I hadn't thought of, and any scriptwriter has to be better than Lucas. However I still think they'll be some restrictions; they'll pick directors like that as long as they're happy to go a long with Disney's (commercial) vision. They threw money and a fanboy director at John Carter and look what happened. Iron Man had no legacy to live up to and managed to cast a brilliant lead actor, and it's the type of film that can be essentially all about him without ruining it, I can't see that working with Star Wars.

I'm sure they'll make it very successful in the manner that Lucas made it very successful, but I'd imagine they'll also make it very dull and sanitised in the manner that Lucas did. They will probably be 'better' films than the prequels in terms of direction and writing, but I can't imagine Disney taking it anywhere other than down the clean and family friendly path that it's already on. There's a reason why the Marvel films have all been of a certain ilk while Christopher Nolan has taken Batman down a very different path.
