Windoze 7 newbie help

I'm just setting up a new PC with Windows 7, and it's my first time using it (as I've been quite happy using XP).

I'm struggling to find where various settings are. Most i've found eventually, but what I can't find is how I stop it going back to the login screen after a few minutes of no use.

I anyone able to tell me how to stop that? Thanks.

Like just after x mins of idle time? Thats the power settings. Control panels - power settings - "change when computer sleeps" and you can customise from there.

Change "when the computer sleeps" to "never".

Best thing about Windows 7 is the split screen option. You can drag one window all the way to the right and it will resize to 50% and then the same for the window on the left. Well handy if you're sort of watching something but also want to work in another window simultaneously.

It's not the screen going to sleep that's annoying me, it's the desktop being locked out by the password prompt after a couple of minutes of inactivity. It's driving me nuts having to login every couple of minutes.

Yup, the snap feature is a massive improvement,

The search feature on 7 is brilliant as well. Just search any program or document using the windows button, almost instant. Vast improvement with the search algorithm on previous versions.

Control panel though is too wrapped up on the default setting, but you can set it to be the classic XP view fairly easily

Think you need to go to screen saver settings and uncheck the "on resume display logon screen"

I'm quite amused that I waited until windoze 8 came out and then bought windows 7.

But that's the result of me reading just how shit windows 8 is for desktops yesterday.

We have Microsoft in here today, fucking Windows 8 all over the place, balloons, chocolate, formula 1 car in the canteen etc.

WIn8 looks ok to be fair but aimed very much at a tablet user. Theyve removed the fucking start button! The bastards.

perhaps, tho from what I've read it seems most technology commentators don't think so.

It's going to be a hard job for it to make a big impact, as Microsoft only supplies the OS to less than 30% of devices that people use nowadays.

And of that "new way of working" is all that is claimed for it, it gets to mean that every previous statement from Microsoft for the last 30 years has been empty guff ... which of course some of us knew anyway, but others swallowed it whole.

Anyone got a clue on how to fix this one?

It's the error message I'm getting when trying to access one of two mapped drives I've made to samba shares on a linux server.

An error occurred while reconnecting S: to \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\sharename

Microsoft Windows network: multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the same user, using more than one username, are not allowed. Disconnect all previous connections to the server or shared resource and try again.

Separate question: Is it true Windoze 8 will only allow two applications to run (on the screen) at the same time, I know multiple ones can run in the background - but you can only view two side by side.

I do remember some things where changed in the way Windows handles network shares... I had loads of problems getting Microsoft and Mac to talk... Might be something to do with that... Sorry I cant be more help...

I only ever think microshit are shit when they're shit, as they're being here. And just as they proved themselves to be the other day by making it as difficult as possible to unsubscribe from their subscription services. All they've done to me with that is proven that they're not worthy of having my money for their subscription services, so rather than do that I'll make sure I try every other option before subscribing to one of their services. Talk about counter productive, and they seem to have forgotten everything about the word they used to live by, 'intuitive'; I now intuitively know that they're shit.

...looking more at Windows 8 do i have to pay a subscription every year for Office 365, and a subscription every year to back up with a subscription to Cloud (in addition to buying these products) - no wonder the upograde is so cheap!
