However I think and hope we are moving in the right direction, towards a more enlightened society. The massive boost to this being the internet, of course, as russy points out above

Oh pleeeeaaaasssee!!

How the fuck does looking at pictures of cats make people more politically aware? Even with the 'facebook revolutions' it was people being blocked from looking at pictures at cats which kicked things off, and not anything meaningful.

I think Mardy is saying that Glastonbury isn't mere "entertainment". Its much more vital than that and is an important part of culture. And hes right. It changes peoples outlook on life. Getting as many people to the festival as possible, people who need hope and change in their lives as is the case of a lot of people who are out of work, is important for society.

Would be different if he was suggesting it for Millwall season tickets.

So you don't think there's any value in having a world of information at your finger tips? Being able to communicate with people from across the world, take interest in their culture, their history, their successes and failures? Learning from each other?

If people want to look at cats, then that's up to them. You can't blame the tool for the users inadequacies.

Oh, it's a great tool. And it can be used to break down all those sorts of barriers. But does it? Nope. Cos people in general aren't interested, unless perhaps there's a bargain to be had at the end of it.

There's a world of information out there. A quick look at the world shows it's making no difference.

Maybe you're right I don't know. The internet is still in it's infancy, and I don't know what criteria you would use to judge progress. I do believe mass media is responsible for making things like racism and homophobia (largely) socially unacceptable, and live in hope that the internet will help accelerate the removal of remaining prejudices. As I say, I don't really know, just chucking it out there.

I don't think there's anything inherently bad about the net, i'm merely saying it's only as useful as the people who use it. And that doesn't really hold out much hope.

I'd say that the changed attitudes to race and (to a lesser extent) sexuality are more to do with ideas whose time had come than anything else. Much as with happened towards drink-driving. We do move forwards, slowly.

But with 2 steps forwards there's always at least a step back from the reactionary forces. That's what's behind Al-Qeada and the like, the rise of nutty yank Christianity, the tories & UKIPs in the UK, and so many more of who like to imagine that they're something completely different to the others who are really just like them.

Good post megabowl. I genuinely don't think it is tokenism, but I see where you're coming from. I don't know how to do more than one quote in a post, so this might be a bit of a pigs ear, but I'll have a go.

"Why do the unwaged get more help for a Glastonbury ticket than someone who is working two jobs to pay the bills but can't afford a Glastonbury ticket? Significant numbers in society work full time hours but because of the shitty system we live in need tax credits to top up their wage so their ends meet. Why do they not get help? Students are the engine of society in the future and thanks to this government have been shafted and will have mountains of debt to pay off, why do they not get help?"

Yeah, honestly, I like my second idea more, where I say you pay 0.0081 of your annual income. Makes more sense on refection.

"Allocating 17500 for the unwaged, in fact allocating any number is unfair. It isn't comparable to student discount at HMV because Glastonbury tickets are a finite resource. At the minute if you don't get a ticket it's down to being unlucky in the lottery. All of a sudden people-including the people I mention in my first paragraph-will be wondering if the reason they can't do the thing they were dreaming of doing is because their ticket was set aside for someone who, because they are unwaged, was deemed more worthy of a ticket. Not exactly inclusive"

I'm going to disagree with that, I think currently, society is at a worrying crossroads where the gaps are widening. One of the most depressing things on this site is the regularity with which 'chav' is used. I fucking hate it. Look at some of the scorn poured on the unwaged in this thread. if it takes a bit of positive action to equal things out, then so be it. Price, in my opinion, worth paying.

"I would suggest that any arbitrary scheme to make Glastonbury 'inclusive' is in fact not, because it will be based on a prejudice that one group within society is more worthy than another"

Much of society currently deems people to be more worthy based on their income. To which I can only inarticulately mumble 'fuck that'. I don't believe a banker is more valuable than a nurse just becuse they earn more money. That's arse about face. Anything that begins to redress that current way of thinking is a step in the right direction for me.

"The only economically fair way to sell Glastonbury tickets is to issue everyone with a winning ticket, then ask for all 137,500 people to send in proof of what they earn. Then divide £28,187,500 (£205 multiplied by 137,500) among the lucky winners according to what they earn. Any other scheme is going to be unfair. Of course you then get the problem that if 110000 unwaged get the tickets, the other 27500 have to find that £28,187,500. In reality, the current system is probably the most practical."

I've said, everyone should pay .0081 of their annual salary. I didn't realise we were sticking to what's practical. Glastonury itself is a ludicrous brilliantly impractical place. Start looking at in practical terms and there's cost cutting all over the shop, the unpopular stages get shut down, the bins don't get painted, the flags don't get put up. I'm always mildly worried when people start talking about practicality as a rationale. Most of the changes in society (good and bad) haven't been driven by practicality, lets not start now.

"The offer of Glastonbury tickets for £135+travel+drink+food rather than £205+travel+drink+food would be a complete irrelevance to me."

That's you, not sure you can extrapolate. Put the offer out there, if you're right, no-one will take it up. What's to lose?

Nice one, though, appreciate the engagement, it's got me thinking.

    • 👍 plus they brought their own screens 📺 either side of the stage.
    • Production was the only thing that could even explain why she would back out. Like they had sorted out the financials and she was fine with it and then a production meeting happened. It all fell apart. It was very clear that she was not going to compromise her show one bit and then that show in Brazil pretty much confirmed it. There was like one element they couldnt pull off outdoors, but it was negligible since the rest was a carbon copy of the tour she had been on. Glasto is not willing to make any bold changes on the Pyramid stage so then theyre kinda stuck in terms of what some acts want/demand. I think the easiest solution to that is putting her on Friday. You deal with the changes for one night and then re configure for the rest of the weekend. In 24 they were fortunate to have had Dua and Coldplay on Fri and Sat so they could both use the b stage. But I think it was removed for Sunday?     I saw a random rag article earlier that said Olivia Dean turned down Glasto BECAUSE her ex ( not even confirmed dating ) Harry Styles was playing the fest. hahahaha
    • No argument that he’s bigger than ever, I just have no enthusiasm for it.
    • Keep in mind those crowds were full of teenagers. Glasto aint full of teenagers. Theres no way she could demand headline and get it because they got other acts to give the slot to who deserve it with a bigger catalog. Reading/Leeds would headline her cause its still LN.  If the fest was struggling its Other headline. But a 3rd down Pyramid is likely the landing spot. Itll go down like the Camila Cabello performance pretty much.
