going to give 22 Jump Street another spin too as i remember that was also pretty funny..

ok, few things getting my 2cents this week... lets start with the good...

 

Masters of the Universe (2026)

loved the cartoon back in the day, Dolf Lundgrun was great fun... i watched this with zero expectations (or if i did i probably expected the worst) but what the hell, i thought it was great. dumb as sh*t, sure, but great fun and hugely entertaining, deffo recommend if you have a couple of hours to kill and want some brainless fun.

 

Hereditary

this film is one of two (along with A Quiet Place) that made me decide i would never go to the cinema again until the rules were changed to make films the same as any other product - that is, if its faulty, or falsely advertised, or not fit for purpose then you are entitled to your money back.

i hated this film when i first saw it. recently Mrs -TLR- watched it again and said her view of it had changed and she thought it was pretty good. so i gave it another go. i was right the first time. it is an absolute pile of sh*t. the bit where she is cutting her head off in the shed, in the cinema everyone was, literally, laughing out loud... but even that bit this time i just watched it thinking this is absolute garbage. its not often a film makes me hate it so much it actually makes me angry, but Hereditary sure does.

 

The Housemaid

the only reason i watched this was because it started playing automatically after Hereditary on Prime. Amanda Seyfreid and Sydney Sweeny.. what the hell, how bad can it be?

well, the answer is rather simple.

it is sh*t.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day

 

Highlight was a bloke reacting to the post-credit scene by going "Holy f**k it's Tobey Maguire!" despite the scene having no reference to him at all. Which made my close-to-full screening of the film laugh a lot.

 

Film was pretty good. It was interesting as much as an exploration of the ramifications of the end of No Way Home and being about isolationism and male loneliness, which I thought it actually did quite well. Though I do ponder if I liked it as much as the other 3 Tom Holland Spider-Man movies. Sadie Sink was good tbf, while I also liked Jon Bernthal as Punisher, enough that I might go watch his Disney+ shows.

 

Seem to have had a Marvel kick recently having also watched Thunderbolts and Shang-Chi, both of which I thought were pretty good.

When I was in the cinema to watch The Odyssey a few weeks ago, I saw a trailer for a film called One Night Only. Premise is a rom-com but with a backdrop that it's the one night of the year where non-marital sex is legal.

 

Some of the background mechanics as to how this works as per the reviews seem creepy and like something a lot of people wouldn't just accept and go with. How you marry that to a rom-com narrative is bizarre.

I think Thunderbolts probably had one of the more interesting villains for an MCU movie. I was actually a bit creeped out by Void. I'm a massive horror movie fan, and I can't think of another time in the last couple of years where a character legit scared me like he did. 

 

Brand New Day was a good time. A great villain choice as it played into Parker's insecurities. Castle was a strange inclusion but the dynamic between him and Parker was great. Castle must have been delighted to have someone who never seen themselves as superior to him like Murdoch pretty much always did.

A lot of people have said this online but does the Marvel world need new cities to play with? New York seems to be a target of all the villains to the point where you wonder why anyone in that world still lives there. Much as you can accuse me of overthinking it I guess haha. 

 

I do agree that The Void is a compellingly different villain in many respects given the superpower is trapping people in their most traumatic memories. Shame in some respects the film came out in the post-Endgame funk Marvel seems stuck in and a lot of people missed out on it. 

 

Speaking of, I rewatched Infinity War the other day. First time I think I've seen it since seeing it in the cinema on its opening day. Holds up pretty well imo - I have issues sometimes with ensemble casts and jumping between 4/5 storylines but it felt this one got the balance right and also properly explored Thanos. So it was good.

watched Mystic River for the first time, overall i thought it was superb.

 

good shows from the three leads, well made, interesting and pretty solid all round.

 

a minor character moan tho - i thought the "Savage brothers" were ridiculous, they were like cartoon villains and kinda took  you out of the movie abit with their dastardly antics.

 

also, i hated, and i mean i HATED the ending.

 

there is a scene where Kevin Bacon is talking to Sean Penn in the morning after the night everything happens, and he says to him "when did you last see Dave"... then we get a close up of Sean Penns face, and you can see the cogs going round and he is struggling to decide what he is going to say... if the screen had cut to black at that moment it would have been the perfect ending... everything that happens after that is totally pointless and just detracts from the great movie you have just seen.

 

but i liked it. can't actually believe i never saw it before.

can't edit, but just to add to the above:

 

i get that the last bit is meant to reinforce the message that they are all horrible people and closing ranks to cover up what has happened and carry on with their lives while poor Celeste is left alone with her trauma...

 

i get it thematically, i just really hated the way it was on screen and i say that my ending would have made for a better movie.

Well worth watching and the 2 Punisher series can be viewed alone, season 1 being the better one but both pretty good.

 

Bernthal's Frank Castle first showed up in Daredevil in a couple of episodes before the standalone Netflix Punisher series then popped up again in Daredevil: Born Again before this years One Last Kill and Spider-Man. To be honest all those old Marvel Netflix shows from the Defenders universe are worth a watch. I recently went through them all in order and really enjoyed.

The best Punisher stuff from the Bernthal time is probably Daredevil. Although season 2 of Punisher is a great kinda study on what Castle can be.

 

But his first turn up in Daredevil was an absolute blast. 

 

I thought Brand New Day did a decent job with him.
