Just been reading the update on this years Shangr la on Glastonbury website. I have myself never got my head around this part of Glastonbury at all,for me its all a bit to wierd, not saying there is anything wrong with it as it loads love it. I had planned to give it another go this year, and go later on at night, but looking at the write up i think i may give it a miss,it looks very exciting, but maybe not for someone of my age...

MY folks come to Glastonbury last year, they'd never been to a festival before, never even entertained the idea. I'll be honest, I was bricking it.

anyway, they had a great time, but the thing that amazed me most is how much they loved walking through the late night areas, just watching all the people and what was going on. They're never going to be dancing, going mental, whatever, but they loved the whole late night areas, standing and enjoying everythign around them. So much so, that when I was tucked up on my tent on the Sunday night, they were off round it again.

I've never seen Shangri La as it started since I last went in 2003, but I am very much looking forward to experiencing it. Unfortunately, describing anything as "cool" generally puts me off, but I'll try to ignore that and hope to be impressed by weirdness, creativity and deviance. However, if it's little more than some late night bars and the odd light-show I doubt I'll go back.

I had a wild night up there with your folks in Bez’s Acid House when you toddled off to bed one night. Your old boy was screaming “PEAK” at Bez and asking to hear some “old skool Alern-8 motherf**ker”, doing the Keith Flint headrubbing shake dance from the Firestarter video and screaming “THIS IS THE SOUND THEY’VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR” at the top of his lungs while your Mum was singing “SAY IT LOUD! SAY IT LOUD! SAY IT LOUD! SAY IT LOUD!”.

Always the quiet ones.

All I want to say is, don't slate Shangri-La until you've been in the nano-venues. And be there when it's quiet enough to enjoy them -- but busy enough that there's an atmosphere.

From the blog, it does seem they're making an effort to make some of it work in the daytime too.

There really is something for everyone in Shangri La. We went in about 9pm on the Saturday last year for a wander around. Went right up tthe back to the small bar with seats outside (Cider Smugglers perhaps?) when we went in there was a lovely old couple who looked at least late 60s sitting having a pint. It was one of the nicest sights I've ever witnessed at a fest and made me realise just how amazing Glasto is.

Cannot wait for Shangri la this year.:D

I've never made it to Shangri La myself. Am very intrigued. Have headed there every night after headline act but have always been turned away due to crowd issues. What time would peeps advise getting there? Before headliners or say leaving it until 3ish> what time does it all wind down?

Yeah, I think the best time to be there is during a headliner. Of course, this means there needs to be a headliner you're not bothered about missing.

I assume it's also good much later, when the part-timers have got tired and gone to bed. Alas, I am one of those part-timers. And of course, to appreciate it, it probably helps being able to keep your eyes open.

Hmm, am trying to be be as objective as possible. I wandered in early last year waiting for Nick Turner, the first thing that I noticed was the bins overflowing with waste - it's not so noticable in the main areas during the day because of the mayhem :) and I am fully aware of the constant attention and constant work this issue gets whilst the festival is on. Having lost that it felt a little soulless but understand it was due to the time of day; I think that Arcadia 'has it' so what to do - I think it's a place of charm for the day everything sweet and calm with lovely ladies and fine dapper men on the stroll, but by night let it be it's self - decadent and amazing no the only probable way to get that is the employ of some 'randomes' :) Anyway, that's it.

Love it all really, count the minutes
