Just thought I'd make a thread for all politics going on just now.

Anyway I've just woke up and as of 7.15am on the 6th May, the returns look like this...

Scottish Parliament

Seen as I am in Scotland I'll only mention that but basically up here, Labour are getting a royal kick in and the SNP are flying away with it taking support from all three of the other major parties which I don't mind as I can't stand Labour.

In my seat at least, my sitting Labour MSP didn't loose any notable ammounts of votes since the last time. A host of new voters/dissatisfied Lib Dems voted SNP this time. This seems to be mirroring elsewhere too.

A few factors come into this - Ian Gray and the national campaign being f**king brutal, very popul(ar or ist - you choose) policies of the SNP like freezing the council tax and free prescription v's Labour's campaigns carry a knife go to jail (people would rather seem to 'save' money in reality, knife crime isnt on people days to day minds and isnt an election winner) and obviously Alex Salmond being able t in over a lot of news media and financial backers.

The SNP fought a good national campaign where as Labour didn't. It looks bad seat wise for Labour, but vote % wise it isnt as bad. Still a very horrible and upsetting night for me. I lost my MSP, one of the best MSP's in Holyrood Tom McCabe.

It's a write off. No delay in looking at next years elections now!

Some guy on the telly was saying summer 2014 will see the independence referendum. Commonwealth Games, Ryder Cup in Scotland and 700th anniversary of Bannockburn all coming that year and we will be lifting the World Cup in Brazil too, so there will be a feelgood factor towards nationalism.

Please dont confuse a vote for the SNP as a vote for independence.

Another thing I should add, with the Tory Libs in Westminster a vote for the SNP may be a vote for who they (wrongly ) think may protect them best against the big nasty Conservatives.....even tho Ms A Goldie has been helping the SNP all the way last term.

I think a big problem for labour is the fact that they send the politicians who they think have the most potential to westminster. Im sure Ian Gray is a decent bloke but he has no charisma at all.

BBC: Scottish election: Salmond victorious after party's win

• Yellow colour indicates where SNP candidates to parliament were elected.

• Red is Labour

• Blue is Conservative

• Orange - islands at the top, (North) is Liberal Democrat

SNP leader Alex Salmond said his party's majority win at Holyrood was "a victory for a society and a nation".

During an address in Edinburgh, he said the SNP had "a majority of the seats, but not a monopoly on wisdom".

He added that the SNP would carry the hopes of the nation and make it proud.

Once all results were in,

• the SNP totalled 69 seats,

• Labour had secured 37,

• the Tories had 15,

• the Lib Dems won 5,

• and others totalled 3.

Mr Salmond said: "This party, the Scottish party, the national party, carries your hope. We shall carry it carefully and make the nation proud.

"I'll govern for all of the ambitions for Scotland and all the people who imagine that we can live in a better land.

"This party, the Scottish party, the national party, carries your hope. We shall carry it carefully and make the nation proud. Thank you very much."

The SNP took key seats in Labour heartlands and the Liberal Democrat vote also collapsed.

What nobody ever mentions in the Scottish independence debate is that if there was a referendum in the rest/whole of the UK on whether Scotland should 'cede from the union' then English voters (i can't say how they'd vote in Wales or NI) would, i believe, opt overwhelmingly for Scottish independence. I don't know anyone here in England that wants to maintain Scotland as part of the same entity as England.

It depends on what parts of England. Richer areas and Tory areas certainly. However, a lot of places in England know that Scotland is a massive part in ensuring that constant Conservative Govts dont happen, and know the consequences if that anti-Tory vote was removed.
