The Russian bid was a good one (all the European ones were, tbh) The argument 'Oh but its been 44 years since England last had the World Cup' is extremely arrogant. Yes, the England bid was good, better than the 2006 one, but there are definately understandable reasons why it was given to Russia.

Qatar's a different story though. I've got family out there, and they seemed to be pretty pleased about it though....

I just hope the british press will get off panoramas case, and maybe do some proper f**king investigative journalism into FIFA's corruption. Where is the "fake sheikh" when you need him. The whole organisation is as bent as a nine bob note, we have the quality journos to do it, maybe this might spur them into action?

Qatar is, ironically enough, a safe pair of hands. The stadiums will be built on time and to a high standard (thanks to a rising oil price)

And I'm not sure calling the bid committee corrupt really washes. The media will never admit this, but the FA have been trying to butter up voters for years (friendlies in Trinidad and Qatar come to mind - corruption in all but name) England just arent as good at it as the others.

it defo needs doing, but it'd be a bad thing overall if it was done from the UK. Another country needs to get on their case.

The simple fact is that England is the most disliked country within FIFA, for historic reasons. It's something that's not going to disappear until long after Havelange is dead and buried.

I think this is also one of these occasions when English arrogance is definitley a case.

What experience does William Wales have to be one of the leading figures of the bid? A irrelevant degree, limited experience in the military, a figurehead position of the FA. To think the rest of the world should care about this man and what he thinks is beyond stupid. And for him to reference his own wedding in the presentation was absurd.

‎"Prince William's enthusiasm for football both as a player and a fan is well known and we believe his presidency will prove a great asset to the national sport."

A factually incorrect and frankly, anti English, comment.

Out of the bidding countries, England realistically is the only one which could hold the World Cup tomorrow if need be. The only significant flaw in bid was our unreliable public transport system, and being honest, that would not actually stop many fans from getting to games. England has the stadiums, the infrastructure and the ability to stage a successful finals.

Spain and Portugal are both on the verge of bankruptcy, Russia is too big and requires a lot of infrastructure work to hold a successful finals, and Belgium and Holland are frankly to small and would struggle to justify building the stadiums required as a 'legacy' and the fact that it was a joint bid put serious dents in their bid.

I do find it a trifle odd that the reason FIFA didnt want a joint hostwas because of the travelling between South Korea and Japan in 2002, I can hardly see travelling across Russia being the easiest and quickest in the world.

Once you get past the spin of the first World Cup in Africa bullshit, the 2010 World Cup was not a success.

Empty stadiums, no atmosphere at lots of the games, poor quality of lots of the games, not to mention the dodgy refereeing with the blatant favouritism shown towards the African teams (esp. Ghana).

Given the number of EDL supporters in football shirts in preston last weekend, we're in something of a glass house on that one.

Aye

If need be? What need might that be?

Specifically what spin bullshit do you refer to?

I think England put in a very good bid from what I've seen and I did quite fancy having a World Cup right on my doorstep but a part of me wanted it to fail purely because that smug c**t Cameron would claim it as one of his sucesses even though he had little to do with it.

Still, there's a hell of alot of corruption and they don't even seem that bothered about people knowing about it.

Perhaps a joint UK bid next time like the rugby World Cup in 1990?:P

I'm heading out for a easy trail run today I think, 10k- 10 mile we'll see how we go. I've got a half marathon in October I'm well unprepared for hahs
    • The Cheap Thrills at Mountford Hall, Liverpool.    They've been around for a while and have built up a large local following. Last night was their biggest yet, at a sold out 2,200 capacity venue.    It was a big old joyous, indie singalong from start to finish, the band clearly having the time of their lives. The debut album is out next month and they seem to be going down well on the festival circuit, maybe their time has finally come.   2 supports, I unfortunately missed Credits but the few songs they have on Spotify sound good, Americana vibes. The other was M60, reportedly Gary Neville's favourite band. If that's true, he's as clueless about music as he is football. To be fair, their sound was poor, maybe with a clearer sound they'd have been better but it was pretty dull.
    • I can see them all merging along with the Tory’s . Restore curently couldn’t muster enough candidates to be a viable option . I lasted 4 mins and couldn’t watch any more . Lowe is just dull along with racist
