Flaming Lips bigger than Kooks? Orbital bigger than Kooks? Honestly what makes you come out with such garbage? I'm not even a big fan of the Kooks but to say they'd be lucky to headline the JPT is idiocy. Complete idiocy! Kooks have only had 2 albums out but I'm pretty sure both have sold more than any album of Orbital, Flaming Lips, Bloc Party or Franz. They can sell out good sized venues pretty easily. They sold out 5 nights at Brixton on their last tour. And that was on the second tour of the second album! And they have more hits than Flaming Lips and Orbital. In 2007 theywere subbing the Pyramid! And Leftfield I'd say are a similar size to Orbital. Since theres a good chance theres a dance kind of act on the Other headlining, I thought I'd go with them instead of the usual Chemical Brothers, Basement Jaxx that people have come out with and who have played fairly recently or often.

Hi, I appreciate that the Kooks may have sold 2 million plus copies of their first album and it was pretty good. It is one of those records that if you look at the CD collection of a casual music fan you are more than likely to find a copy. sometimes you get the right sound and the right album at the right time and the kooks were this a few years back.

However I would not venture that after a lacklustre second album (konk) that it could be argued that they are bigger than the flaming lips or orbital. Music moves on quickly and a lot of bands havn't ...

I'd agree that the seond albums pretty lacklustre and tbh as I've said I'm not a big fan of theirs. BUT, the second album still sold pretty well, garnered 3/4 tracks that were heavily played on the radio, they still were able to sell out good size venues (before the album was released and approx 9 months after that, therefore the reception and lower sales than the first album didn't affect their live draw) and they were able to command good festival slots as the 2nd from top pyramid proves. If you want to look at a closer date, they played 3rd from top at V last year. Same slot as Paul Weller on the other day. That tells me that they're bigger than Orbital and the Flaming Lips.

Bloc Party's second, all of Franz Ferdinand's, and a Flaming Lips record have outsold at least one Kooks. Can't find Orbital.

And you don't think any of those bands can't? Flaming Lips headline festivals. I'm pretty certain Flaming Lips and Franz could both easily sell five nights in Brixton, but Flaming Lips are currently only playing a special gig in the UK at Alexandra Palace to perform a seminal record, and Franz are coming to the end of the tour. If Bloc Party regrouped soon, they easily could.

1) You come across as a bit of a dick. Calm down. Are you the singer or something?

2) In terms of Glastonbury, Orbital and Flaming Lips are far bigger than the Kooks having previously played legendary sets. Orbital in 1995 is regarded by many as the big breakthrough for dance music at Glastonbury, Flaming Lips played a couple of times working their way up to subbing Radiohead on the Pyramid in 2003 which was a massive success. The Kooks played too high up the Pyramid in 2007 (see also-Fratellis in 2008) off the back of a few months of being fashionable and it's in no way regarded as anything except by, say, fans of the band.

Glastnobury is about far more than the previous years sales.

Franz or Bloc Party haven't really got any history and they headlined the Other Stage and they're not as big as the Kooks. They also had a time of been fashionable as you say. Franz around 04 - 06, but they were still able to headline the Other stage in 08 because their popularity hasn't slipped to a lower level than that. Just because they've got smaller in size doesn't mean that there now tiny in size and are still not a draw. If by looking at previous Other Stage headliners, than I don't think that the Kooks have slipped to a level that they are smaller than the majority of those. And thats why I've come up with a guess that headlining the Other stage against u2 wouldn't be a bad idea.

It wouldn't surprise me if you still thought The Kooks could headline Other despite several people showing you their not the calibre of previous headliners.

The best post in this thread is where Rubenz quite correctly places Kooks in with Fratellis, View and Enemy. These bands were all at the right time (post Libertines indie landfill) and capitalized on that.

In response to Kooks live draw, Kooks may have sold out five nights at Brixton, but Franz and Bloc Party have both sold out Alexandra Palace with The Flaming Lips well on the way to doing it, and i'm sure if Bloc Party announced a reunion tomorrow, it would sell out.

It may have been extreme of me to say they'd be lucky to headline JPT, but there's no way they'd headline Other. They're simply not a big enough draw at this current time. I agree they may have been big enough when they were at their peak, butt there's no way now.

I dont mind the Kooks, but the fact that LCD Soundsystem (who produced in my opinion one of the best albums of the decade) could not headline the Other Stage when they were playing probably their last ever Glasto, i just cant see the kooks with there current popularity (no album for almost 3 years) even touching the headline slot of the Other.
