Tbh, I think it's worse to give your kids average names than interesting ones.

My parents called me Rebecca. There were 5 other Rebeccas in my school year, and one Rebekah, and I had at least one of them in each of my classes. I ended up thinking of all sorts of stupid nicknames for myself just to be a little different.

My dad wanted to call me Madison but my mum told him people would've called me Mad and I would've got teased. But I really, realllly wish she'd allowed it because having an average name sucks.

I intend to give my kids more interesting names when the time comes. I like the idea of boys having surnames for first names. It's good to have a name that stands out.

Jacob Port Vale Nixon, to give his full title, is already gearing up for his debut at Vale Park where his dedication to the cause will no doubt win him plenty of kudos among fellow supporters.

But at just one-month-old, Jacob is currently more interested in his dummy than football.

Jacob's Vale-mad dad Jason, aged 36, from Blurton, came up with the idea for his newborn son's middle names.

If you really want to take it far, I did read on one of the mums forums recently that when choosing a name you should consider the following:

1. Picture it on a cup in a playgroup.

2. Picture it on a peg in school

3. Make a nickname out of it. Think about slang/any words the name might sound like.

4. Picture your child saying it on the first day of Secondary School. Picture the reactions of their peers.

5. Imagine the name being said by a mumbling teenage.

6. Imagine it being said at a graduation.

7. Think about it on a letterhead/list of company directors

Can't say it ever bothered me not being able to buy a tacky mug with my name on just meant people had to put a bit more effort in if they wanted to buy me personalised gifts! Took 25 years before I met someone with the same first name as me. I was born and grew up in places where my name was totally unheard of but as I live closer to Wales these days it doesn't seem to be a problem - everybody round here can pronounce and spell it without having to ask. At primary school I always wanted to be called Sarah but now I really like having a name that's a bit different, even if it's not particularly girly!

I always thought giving your kid the same name as you but with jnr. at the end was tacky.

It must be tiring for any kid or person even who has a strange/different/awkwardly spelt/pronounced name throughout their life, always having to correct teachers, new friends and randoms. Its that awkward pause when you introduce yourself and you are met with a quizzical look, a 'can you repeat that?' or the people you have just met just cant say your name back to you properly. I work with a lovely girl with Iranian heritage. Her name is Jumana, hardly difficult to say but she is Jimmy, Banana, Jumanji, Jemima at work because none of the guys can say her real name! Understandably she does get quite p'eed off.

Each to their own at the end of the day. Just dont wreck ya kids life by being an out there kooky parent and giving them a silly name.

My cousins are half Greek and so the eldest is named after his father's father as is the tradition. (See My Big Fat Greek Wedding for the injoke of this - introduction of American boyfriend to the Greek girl's 20+ cousins, every boy/young man at the dinner is called Nick or Nicko and the one girl is Nicola.)

For girls it is the mother's mother's name the child is given.

You are the only Olwyn I have ever met but I did once meet an Arwen...I do believe her parents were big LOTR fans. She was quite embarrassed by it (especially as I met her in 2003 when the films were very popular still).

I am Lucy (obviously) but wouldnt have minded either Nancy or the Amber that were possibilities. And in fact sometimes wish my middle name was my first as Elizabeth has SO many shorter versions/nicknames with it. Luce, Juicy Lucy, LoosePoose, LoobyLoo (<<< my personal utter HATED one!) are just all shit.

Would have been a Charles or Edward had I been a boy.

Well I know why I'm called Jonathan (although I go by Johnny). My grandad was John, my dad is the eldest and was called John, I reckon that my dad wanted to carry on that and my mum didn't so they negotiated and came to Jonathan. I've never asked them, doubt they would tell me anyway, but I reckon it must be this.

I'd rather have something a bit different to one of the most common names in the world (especially Johnny, and that was my choice to shorten it to that as well arrggghh)

I think Ricardo's a cool name.
