You're right it is, which is why I'd only go as far as over the line type technology and then just post match disciplinary stuff.

A review system could be fun too though, it would have to be for specific things though (hand balls and offsides only I reckon) that are going to lead to, or prevent, a goal scoring opportunity, to stop them being called willy nilly.

2 for each team, get it back if its upheld.

This i'd be dead against. Probably so much so I'd stop going - mind you will only be doings aways after 2013/14 anyway.

I'd still be against it, but if you are going to use any kind of video/4th official evidence - it'd have to be at the request of the referee like in rugby, rather than either team.

It wouldn't work with the ref, it would be too easy for him to rely on the technology and they'd be hundreds of reviews. The team review system works in the NFL, the reviews are valuable, so they only use them when they really need to

I don't think so - there aren't hundreds of reviews in rugby. As previously discussed there are many more breaks in play in NFL before you take replays/reviews into account - there aren't those breaks in play in football.

the amount of throw ins, free kicks, goal kicks, restarts after goals, injuries etc, it's far more stop start than you would be led to think by neil and you had you never seen a game.

Interesting the answer was on the times podcast. He was saying that the average game was 50-61 minutes ball in play. Marcotti proposed moving to a system with 30 minute halves where the time stopped when the ball wasnt in play. The thought being it would still last a similar time to now, but would make timewasting harder and also take the timekeeping burden off the ref.

There is a fair amount of time naturally. The major difference is the fact that the two sides are set ready to go when (say) a player is waiting to retrieve a ball gone into the crowd to take a throw in. There isn't the type of stoppage like there is in gridiron where all the players are totally out of position or off the pitch talking to coaches, drinking etc.

correct.

But it would also mean lots of other stoppages during the game too, so that other incidents could be looked at - because there would be other incidents.

I had a look for the same thing, I remember reading something a while back about the ball only being "in play" for an average of about 65 minutes or something per match. There's deffo a figure out there somewhere.

Football is crap with all the rolling around for injuries etc, in game reviews on diving could actually speed things up!

Sorry, I thought you were talking about a referee asking for clarification like in rugby. Didn't realise you meant a team/player asking for a referral after an umpire/referee had made a decision like cricket/tennis.

yeah obvsiously it's not like for like but there's still plenty stoppages. a third of the game in fact if you are to believe what pink_triangle heard

You can adapt it to apply to football quite easily. The NFL/Cricket referal system is a good one and I reckon you can incorporate some instances to ongoing play so that you'll get word without it stopping the game. I personally think that this would add excitement and have people praying at the big screens, while watching the game.

We should have cheerleaders dancing whilst a decision is reviewed, and all get 'free' cheersticks sponsored by the local anheuser busch brewery. Finally everyone should have big WWF style yellow hands to boo decisions given via the big screen.

It's difficult to know what's right without knowing all the details - cos there's a big difference between shooting someone by accident and shooting them deliberately.
