I'm not sure yet if Rooney would fit in with the current squad and style at Madrid. Then again he played well enough with Ronaldo at United and maybe there could be some sort of partnership with Higuain. Not sure where that would leave Benzema either.

My "fresh start" talk is in relation to the family really. If Colleen said to save this marriage we need to get away, new place, new people, you need to lose the influences your around, just us etc". Yes a move to City might be a bit of a fresh start on a personal level for Rooney, but not sure completely on the family level. Rooney will still be in the same city, with the same mates, same house etc.

I did not define an extent, nor was intention for your implicit interpretation to be made, even if scope of "increase in risk" extends that far. I have constructively - and not laughingly - pointed out the Rooney isn't doing anything different to what brought him to Utd in the first place.

Back to football anyway. Purslow leaves Liverpool today amid rumours Woy is on the way out after falling out with a few of the players.

I don't really think much can be read into him leaving. He was a H&G appointment, so it was always likely that the new yanks wouldn't want him to stick around despite any hand he might have had in them buying the club.

As for Woy, I can see that. He looked like a man who knew his days were numbered on Sunday.

Apparently Woy is asking Reina to adapt to a more "English style" of goalkeeping.

Wayne Rooney has confirmed he wants to leave Manchester United.

Rooney has released a statement in response to Sir Alex Ferguson's comments on Tuesday.

And in it, he confirms he wants to leave Old Trafford.

"I met with David Gill last week and he did not give me any of the assurances I was seeking about the future squad," said Rooney.

"I then told him that I would not be signing a new contract."

Rooney admitted he was surprised by the depth of Ferguson's comments yesterday.

He remains a big fan of the United boss but says the future direction of the club was causing him concern.

"I was interested to hear what Sir Alex had to say yesterday and surprised by some of it," continued Rooney.

"It is absolutely true, as he said, that my agent and I have had a number of meetings with the club about a new contract. During those meetings in August I asked for assurances about the continued ability of the club to attract the top players in the world.

"I have never had anything but complete respect for MUFC. How could I not have done given its fantastic history and especially the last six years in which I have been lucky to play a part?

"For me it's all about winning trophies - as the club has always done under Sir Alex. Because of that I think the questions I was asking were justified.

"Despite recent difficulties, I know I will always owe Sir Alex Ferguson a huge debt. He is a great manager and mentor who has helped and supported me from the day he signed me from Everton when I was only 18.

"For Manchester United's sake I wish he could go on forever because he's a one-off and a genius."

Whether he's right or not doesn't really matter in the end tho. He's as entitled to his opinion as anyone else, and he's entitled to act on his opinion.

Only time will tell if he's got it right.

If you buy it. Targetting Gill (as distrusted by some) and the Glazers is a surefire way to redirect any flack he'd get if moving for purely money for example.

Won't play again. It's a public declaration that doesn't think his teammates (or fergie) are good enough, and essentially "I'm bigger than the club".

Time will tell if he's made the correct decision.

Or alternatively - and if you're right about him not playing again - time will tell if Utd have made the correct decision.

Rooney playing again or not, it's Valencia you need back, you're really missing him. What's the timescale on that?

I remember about a year ago thinking he could do with a move to a lower premiership/top championship side. Amazing how things can change. In the last few months of the last premiership season and first few months of this one you could make an argument he has been the best premiership player. Can see city sniffing around but would love him to go to one of th big countries abroad as he could easily become one of the best wing backs in world football.

First thing i'll be doing when FM 11 is out on 5th Nov is putting Rooney on the transfer list, fining him 2 weeks wages and dropping him. That'll teach him, and make me feel slightly better about the whole sorry state !!
