Not in a pub its not. Stevie Gibson was threatening legal action locally against pubs that were showing Boro matches

There is no 100% legal way to get these games free, the pubs are either buying the card or are cardsharing, i'd be interested to hear how it can be done free and legal??

Landlord of my local has been thru the courts. He won!! What other proof is needed to know it's legal?

While the likes of the stuff shown on Nova has "only to be shown in Greece" go across the screen (I suggested the landlord change the pub name to 'Greece' :P), European law says that anyone in Europe is permitted to tune in. Sorted!

you've still got to pay for a cardsharing sub, you can't get any 3pm kick offs just through the receiver without either a card or cardsharing

I know that my local pays for (or did, anyway) a card for Setanta Ireland to get some games, and he might be doing the same with Sky Italy, but he doesn't have to pay the pub licence (which is £10k a year for him with Sky UK), and I'm pretty sure the likes of Nova is free-to-air. Certainly some of the channels he uses are.

I can't say I pay enough attention to know which broadcaster is doing which games at which time.

that's debateable if it's legal or not, sky have got a lot of this equipment removed from pubs so there must be something in it, how exactly is he getting it free??

Like I say, he's been thru the courts, and won. Euro law says he's allowed to access any service in any EU country as tho he's accessing it from that country.

you said earlier you get all the 3pm games 100% free and legal? nova isn't free to air, no 3pm games are on FTA channels

Ahh, OK, I overstated it then. As it's not me that's sorting it, I'm not aware of the fine detail.

Am still pretty damned sure that Nova is one of the FTA's he uses tho.

I think to start with you tried to make it out it was cast iron legal... From what you have written since seems to be less cast iron :)

"Access" is one thing... It sounds like he would be open to a civil case from Sky / ESPN as they hold the exclusive rights for this content in the UK and attempting to receive it without paying the subscription fee could see you in court...

That was my understanding anyway... It sounds like they just went after your landlord the wrong way...

As far as I'm aware, the only thing I've got wrong here is believing that more was from FTA channels than is actually the case.

My understanding is that as long as he's accessing services from other EU countries in a legal manner (so paying a sub if it's needed), then he's accessing it 100% legally. Essentially, how the "UK rights" pan out within EU law is that services from other countries can't be promoted/advertised within the UK. EU law says that anyone is allowed to buy goods and services from any EU country, and while there's some subtext to take that right away again for some particular things (fags and alcohol being the most obvious examples, with limits on the amount that can be taken across borders), it's certainly not the case that it 100% protects someone with exclusive rights to something in one EU territory to only selling within that territory and not other EU territories where there's other rights holders.

I used to have a season ticket at Highbury but had to give it up when we started saving for a house. Based on the last 4 years, we've managed to be able to get tickets for roughly 2 games a year (talking league games, not carling cup which i've been to every game if we were drawn at home) and have called them birthday presents for me and the old man. We try for most games but they rarely get to the point that they go on sale to my level of membership (been on the waiting list to upgrade for 6 years). Tickets are just an arse to get hold of. If I could get tickets for most games i'd rather pay for them and lose sky, but it's not an option for me at the mo. Also my little one would factor into things a lot as well. With work i'm lucky to see her for more than an hour a day during the week so want to spend as much time with her as possible at weekends. I certainly wouldn't follow the side home and away now, because i'd miss too much of her growing up. Turns out there are more important things than football :O

Absolutely.

So what you're saying is that even should you be able to get tickets for every game, you wouldn't due to family circumstances. Which is grand.

But a whole lot different to not going due to not being able to get a ticket.

    • Oh yeah I'd forgotten about their mad scramble to get back from LA to Glastonbury. Though at least there you can blame multiple flight cancellations. I do agree though that it's fair to ask why you'd risk a similar sh*t show.
    • So who's got a good rain dance in the locker, then? Now we're in August the weather watchers can come out of hiding.    Already having flashbacks to last year (the dust cloud of doom at the crossroads by the Courtyard entrance).   Also got to be looking sketchy for the fire/fireworks on the Sunday. Might be a controversial opinion but wouldn't mind it - the fencing annoyance isn't worth the 10 mins of 'oooohhh, aaahhhh', plus the raining of hot embers last year!
