Favourite 'Non-Stage' Places

Every year I always feel like I'm missing out on something... so what are people's tips for things that might be overlooked, are slightly off the beaten track, or are a little hidden, but well worth a visit? Food / Stages / the works.

I'm thinking things like the the casino in the old Lost Vagueness, the Sushi Yurt, the treehouse cafe, or, my personal favourite, the cake and tea shop in the tipi field, which is wonderful for chilling out in at the end of a night.

What are your tips?

Have you investigated the "microvenues" in the Shangri La alleys? You've got to get there before or after the post-Pyramid flood of crowds.

During the day, hovering around near Glebeland is cool -- with all the wandering wackiness.

Last year we had fun with the swinging wicker sphere near Avalon.

It's always worth paying your respects to Jean Eavis, at the mud angel garden.

Open mic plus various live performances at the Banyan Cafe on the main drag on the left up towards the green stuff and stones.

Think its the Banyan cafe anyway? Has loads of sofas inside and comfy benches outside.

Last year at about 3am (think it was the Wednesday actually) I fell through a bush, and on the other side there was this tent which was relatively small (housed about 100 people) with an acoustic piano set going on. Everyone in there was sitting on the floor on cushions and there was a little bar and loads of candles.

Would love to find that again. Was really nice.

This is my main aim for this years festival, enjoying alot of the things away from the main stages.

My only previous visit was 2007, when there seemed to be always somebody on that I wanted to watch.

That, coupled with the weather restricted my ability to experience much other than the music.

Really like what I'm hearing about Shangri La and the other late night areas.

Also can't wait to spend some time in the Jazz & Blues Bar.

During the day i love to sit in the circus field watching weird and wonderful things go by....can easily spend 2 hours sitting watching random acts and bizarre goings on.

Last year at night we often stopped for a chill in a little area full of tealight candles on a bench under a tree.....i think it was in the Green Fields....made me feel so tranquil and peaceful! Although i think we gave quite a few people a fright as it was total darknes by the tree and all they would have seen was the glowing end of our cigarettes in the dark....i remember being called little people under the tree by someone!!

I heard about the beer garden but haven't been and I'd like to find the Piano Bar :-) In 07 there was a lovely bit at the bottom of the kings meadow, near where the wooden dragon carving has been, a group in the green fields had set up their caravans with loads of seating, cushions, blankets and wicker swings. Went back in 08 and 09 but they weren't there

I love permaculture (always get lost in there) and the tunnels under the railway track, but best thing was going through Shangri La's tunnel with all those crazy little venues. It was madness!

Last year, if you entered Shangri La from the East side (i.e. follow the railway line as far as it goes, then turn right and back facing West) then the Alleys were in the big white block on the left.

You enter through a nondescript doorway, and find you're in something like a bazaar in Blade Runner. Doors coming off the alleys take you into little bars, art installations, general wildness.

In 2007 we stumbled across 'Minuscule of Sound', fun was had in there. There was also a juke box with a real band inside!

Never seen these places since so I'm not sure if they are still there!
