People really don't know who the Flaming Lips are? Seriously? I'm worried now. This year at Coachella an excess of musically ignorant teenyboppers flooded the fest and totally killed the vibe. By the third day, I had given up on trying to talk to new people.

Average conversation:

"So did you see Fever Ray on Friday? That was one life-changing experience?"

"Who? Sugar Ray?"

"Nevermind. Little Dragon?"

"Who?"

"Are you going to see Devo tonight?"

"Those old guys with the hats? No way, I'm going to plur to TIESTO! Do you have any rolls? Call me if you find any rolls."

"Charlotte Gainsbourg or Jonsi, what will/did you choose in that unreasonable conflict?"

"Who?"

"Pavement or Orbital?"

"Who?"

"So who are you here to see?"

"Jay-Z, zomg Beyonce! MGMT, Phoenix, Vampire Weekend, Tiesto, Deadmau5, Muse, and isn't Thom Yorke that guy from that Creep band? What do those question marks mean? Do you have any rolls? I need rolls. Why are Gorillaz headlining? They only had two songs and that is when I was in middle school four years ago!"

"Goodbye.

lol ok den

what i meant was that The Flaming Lips arent a band who are just going to be fed to you by the radio - you have to discover them for yourself (aka, what all big music lovers do)

no snobbery intended

i don't get how saying that my friends don't know about them is 'grating' at all either

Sadly glastonbury is pretty much the same these days.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds were 2nd from top on the main stage last year and played a storming set with songs from right across their back catalogue. Unbelievably good, but of course it was watched by a miniscule crowd as most people were watching Glasvegas!

People are idiots.

The one good thing i can take out of U2 possibly pulling out is id get to see FL's set (i was hoping they'd 2nd headline under U2)

Still not much of a consolation for me i do love flaming lips but i was really looking forward to seeing U2 granted some of their new stuff is a bit dodgey but the set lists from the 360 tour were awesome, the one band i was only really bothered about going to see :P

*weeps*

The first 3-4 lines of the verse sound very similar. I don't have a problem with that. Lots of songs sound like one another. Every single 12 bar blues song, for example.

Oh now! He has to get better in time... I've been judged mercilessly for the last few months since coming out to my family by saying "I think... I'm sorry... but I think U2 will put on a really good show. and I will be watching them!"

Dizzee is great, but he's a fun afternoon act I would say! Has the Sun managed to blame Bonos black problem on Gordon Brown yet?

I tend to agree. It was hard to get into it properly due to all the people coming and going and just standing around chatting. And I was right down the front! I wouldnt blame them if they never played glastonbury again, I wouldnt after playing for that crowd.

Does anyone remember that analysis that came out a few years ago which correlated students SAT scores in the States against their favourite types of music? I'll see if I can dig it out.

It's herehere.

It's obviously flawed, but interesting nonetheless.

    • Maybe hopeful but get Knocked Loose on the Sunday opposite the legend. Similar to the slot Turnstile had in 2022. Would be absolutely phenomenal.
    • One of my personal favourite bands at the minute - MUNA. Was very surprised not to see them booked in 2023 with their last album but hopefully they'll be around next year. Very fun new album from these guys and, as aforementioned, another standout for me at Big Weekend.
    • Absolutely second this. Were great at Big Weekend and already have a great catalogue of songs forming so far. Would love to see them on the farm!
    • A mixed first day for us. First of all, we were honestly quite shocked that there was no security check at all at the VIP entrance around 7:30 PM. No bag check, nothing. I’ve attended Primavera many times over the years and this felt surprisingly lax for an event of this size. Did anyone else experience the same?   Another disappointment was the communication regarding the weather situation. Primavera has some of the best sound systems and speaker setups in the festival world, yet somehow they were not able to make a single clear announcement explaining what was happening. Instead, people were expected to read tiny messages on screens in Mordor while thousands were left wondering what was going on. A simple and direct audio announcement would have gone a long way.   On a lighter note, this guy absolutely made my day. Sitting right in front of the Estrella Damm terrace, wearing nothing but a long-sleeve shirt, jeans and a pair of Converse All Stars, he remained completely unbothered by the rain. While everyone else was looking for shelter, he sat there wearing sunglasses, calmly watching the crowd as if he was watching a movie.   Absolute main character energy!
    • I think my party got pretty lucky last night, at least compared to some of the horror stories over on Reddit. I was very impressed with Father John Misty in particular.   Perhaps my view would be different if I were a big Massive Attack fan or whatever, but right now my feeling is that if it's not safe for the shows to go ahead... then it's not safe for the shows to go ahead. I'd much rather they were cautious than roll the dice when it comes to something like that.    Here's hoping everyone has a better day today.
