I kind of enjoy disliking some bands, and I too blame the nme, it goes back to being a surly teenager and thinking that my classmates who went home to listen to Take That instead of The Smiths or Suede were pathetic, vacuous idiots. Basic snobbery and a rejection of all things I didn't want in my identity. I like to think I've shaken this off but it creeps in and I can't help it. However, I think it cuts both ways and sometimes I enjoy liking music that no one else does even if people take the piss, i'm afraid this isn't the case for SFG who I cannot abide, but each to their own.

i may be old, and have never read the NME, but i'm a music snob.

there, i said it loud. im out and im proud.

anybody who isn't into exactly the same music is me is obviously wrong. not only do i know this, simply knowing this makes me cooler than anybody else.

feel free to disagree and prove me right.

:P

Music's totally down to your own tastes. There isn't a right or wrong, it's just what you think about it.

But...

I actually want to kill Simon Cowell, and his X Factor machine...Not necessarily because it's bad music, but because it's being done for the money. Music is (IMO) supposed to be a way to show your feelings, something personal to you. Not something written for you by someone else, inevitably about love.

Then we get someone like Cheryl Cole. God only knows how she ended up with a vaguely successful career in music. She doesn't write her own songs, performances don't actually include singing, and ultimately she has little to no say in what she sings/releases. To me, that's totally defeating the point of being a singer...And that really annoys me.

I might be going off on a tangent here, and I think I have vague memories of Mr Eavis explaining it in the past, but why is there like, NO harder rock or metal at Glastonbury? Is that not 'acceptable' at Glastonbury? I'm not overly arsed cos I've got Sonisphere this year to get my fix of that, but it seems like for such an incredibly diverse line-up that it's completely ignored, particularly when a lot of the European festivals feature a mix like Glastonbury but also with the metal. Or is the market for it already too well catered for it over here with Download/Sonisphere/Boodstock/Reading & Leeds/etc? Thoughts?

yeah, i'm a bit of a soundhead really. i'm really into a lot of music that a lot of people wouldn't know or care to know. but i can still appreciate a great pop song. i love justin timberlake for example. but as much as i like it. manufactured music harms the music industry so much.

take, for example, flying lotus. inarguably one of the greatest musicians in the world. he makes a modest living and plays to relatively small crowds compared to say, scouting for girls.

manufactured music is called manufactured music because it is written with a specific view to getting people to buy it associated with what is a trendy at the time. people lower their standards for being challenged by art and the whole artistic world takes a real backseat in the majority of people's lives.

being a musician becomes something which seems out of reach to people because they compare themselves to lady gaga, or whatever. it also promotes a self image which is harmful to young people. hell, i know 21 year old women who are very insecure simply because they don;t look like whoever. the manufactured music industry actively promoted this.

there's nothing unacceptable about the music itself per se. but as much as its nice to have a sing along to a radio 1 song with 6 choruses, i think people would eventually get used to being enriched by more challenging music over time and it would be beneficial to the whole artistic world.

somebody shoot me down

I'm sorry I can't agree with you.

You don't have to be part of the corporate machine to be a musician.

However, a lots of bands/artist can operate within this system and make money as a by-product of the great music they make.

I have no problem with this.

When a song is written and an image is created for the purpose of making money, this I have a problem with.

That's the last time I try and explain myself.

After the Pearl Jam/Roskilde incident Mr Eavis decided that he didn't want to risk something similar happening in his back yard. Therefore, no hard rock or metal. Bit of a shame as I like some of the heavier stuff, but lets be honest you're never short of something to do or see at Glasto.

Ironically, I'm channel hopping whilst surfing here and Bark at The Moon by Ozzy has just come on Kerrang! Belting. Ozzy for Glasto? :P

Edit: And now Ace of Spades by Motorhead. Come on!

kind of a shame in a way. metalheads are the nicest bunch of folk you could ever wish to meet.

its not like glastonbury needs any more music, but it would be kind of nice though, with a bit a metal and a bit of classical, i can't think of many bases they wouldn;t have covered stye-wise, in one way or another

Metalheads are generally nice, but look at the antisocial twats Reading attracts (warning: opinion may be 10 years out of date).

I think a significant swing towards rock/metal would change the atmosphere significantly, and for the worse.

Then again, I say the same thing about Snoop Dogg.

Then again, we had Enter Shikari several times, and the world didn't end.

I have never liked Scouting for Girls.... I didn't realise that they did get slated on this forum (being a newbie and all! )

The reason I don't like them isn't anything to do with anyone else, I just really don't like the sound and tone of the lead singers voice.... I don't play an instrument, but I do come from a looooooong line of singers, which I guess means that my family consider their voices as their instrument.... it does mean that I am really critical of the voice singing the song and will make a knee-jerk reaction to a band based on the voice that sings.... they could be considered the best band ever but if I don't like the voice I can't bear to listen....

Perfect example is that my Hubby loves Joe Purdy, but I just can't stand his (IMO) whingy nasal voice! hehe! It really annoys my hubby cause I can't even stand hearing it in the house!

A misguided belief that what you like = empirically better than other stuff.

We all fall into this trap - in the OP you say how "they play their own instruments" - why is that a good thing. Girls Aloud don't play any instruments and perform throughly entertaining pop music. Sunn 0))) play their own instruments and they just play the same note out of 7,000 amps for 2 hours.

I used to be REALLY bad in my youth (am only 26 but you know what I meand) at being "X IS SHIT", and I can still trail into that now an again. But I think I've gotten a lot better at just accepting some things aren't for me, and just letting them go. Sometimes people spend so much time extolling hatred on some form of music, I don't know what it is that they DO like.

I'll finish with the sage words of my dad - Judge with your ears and don't listen to anything other people say - you're the one that has to listen to it. He was ridiculed by his Floyd/Zepplin listening mates when he got into punk early doors. A few months later they all had mohawkes.

Please note: I haven't read the thread, so this is probably all irrelevant and given it's now on 4 pages, carry on with the inevitable bunfight that's occuring

the time is here, right now...

there are plenty of artists whose looks aren't the main reason why they're succesful

I know many people like looking at big tits and girls who feign sexuality (Kylie et al).. there's The Sun, strip clubs, porn, a whole world that caters for that..

    • If you didn't see melt banana at Apolo. Go see them at the festival. Insane.
    • Interesting, and thanks for coming back to give an update! I've seen that the second stage looks bigger than usual too, looks to be a Serious Stages - Stellar Stage from distance photos.    Seems like sizing wise stages have been scaled up somewhat this year.
    • I see its cancelled now but they did leave it really late to announce plus they are up against Kelburn Garden Party Festival not to far from the festival site.
    • Easily my favourite set of the day.
