Kermode gives his views on the matter on the current Kermode+Mayo podcast (from before the Winkleman announcement).

I basically agree with him. Film n is a mainstream show, for mainstream people, who want films to be reviewed by someone with a mainstream sensibility.

Mark Kermode is brilliantly entertaining, and often recommends films I like. But he has an arthouse sensibility. When Film n gives its 'Films of the Year' roundup at Christmas, it's just not appropriate for the number one film to be Time and the City or Let the Right One In.

Getting Kermode for the show would be like getting Stuart Maconie to do the Heart FM breakfast show. Yeah, a few of us would find it brilliant. But it's not meant to be for a minority like us.

As for Winkleman, I like her. I've never watched the dancing programme. When she appears on panel shows etc. she's delightfully loopy. She's done her fair share of 'just read the autocue' fodder (including dodgy C5 film shows). I'm not writing off her ability to do it properly on Film n until I've seen it.

Liking E.T. is actually a pretty good qualification. The presenter should like Titanic and Avatar. Because it's about being in tune with the masses, not the intelligentsia or some counter-culture.

The things is Jonathan Ross only like certain genres. He would champion anything out of they genres no matter how shit they were. He would rubbish anything from genres or styles he generaly didn't like, no matter how good they were (good example is Clerks 2)

Exactly. Jonathan Ross didnt have a track record for reviewing films before he started on the Film programme. Neither did Barry Norman - quick look at wikipedia shows he was a showbusiness journalist before fronting the film programme.

If Kermode was chosen, he'd have been the exception rather than the rule.

trying to understand what 'the masses' want is as futile an exercise as there can possibly be.

get dumbass presenters (hi there Ross, Moyles, etc) who are convinced they know what everyone wants... really.. . ("everyone knows what us men want".. etc etc) to perpetuate the lack of expectations that seems to keep everyone so content most of the time..
