Not sure this was the same incident but I saw one which almost immediately after take off drop down towards a few people sitting near the stone circle. They were oblivious to the approaching lantern and it was only the fast reactions of a nearby festival goer which stopped the lantern landing and burning them.

I saw loads at The Big Chill, and they looked great there, but camping is a little further away from the launch site there, it only takes one small fire in one tent to cause chaos at Glastonbury.

You have to laugh - all this worry about sky lanterns burning tents - what about the thousands of camp fires right next to tents and usually up hills in windy conditions!

Anyhow your tent should be flame retardant and if not it serves you right for buying one from a supermarket!

I say let the lanterns burn free!

A couple of total muppets let one go where we were camped in 2008, it was pretty windy and it just flew straight in to the side of my tent. Luckily I was there and grabbed it before it caught but god knows what would have happened otherwise.

When people are too stupid to use them responsibly then yes, perhaps it's right that they're banned.

Yes they can be a danger. (very occasionally)... but used with a modicum of common sense they are just fab and lovey and really just worth chilling out about and enjoying.

Enjoy Chinese/Thai/Whatever Lanterns responsibly and all that otherwise some government or other will no doubt come up with the most obvious and totally effective 'solution' for 'protecting' us all from the menace of dodgy lantern attacks and/or being on the receiving end of a fiery death ... that of making possession with intent to actually use them illegal, increasing the taxation on them, banning special offer lanterns completely or setting a minimum selling price per lantern etc. I mean that works just fine for everything else they try it on doesn't it so it's only a matter of time

A for any possible environmental issues with the wire/paper stylee lanterns, it should be noted that there have been no recorded instances of any problems whatsoever with the shiny new Nuclear Powered variety of lanterns so these are quite obviously 100% safe to use and they're environmentally friendly into the bargain ! Users have never ever made any complaints about them and there is absolutely no evidence of any problems at all when they land. Now, this could possibly be because users tend to crawl off and die fairly shortly after preparing and releasing their lantern and the lantern continues to glow in the dark as it circles the earth for ever and a day so it never actually lands of course. But hey, stats are stats and all that, so no recorded problems means a 100% safety record and it's all good

Some farmer guy was complaining in the local rag about his cows eating the metal after a load cam down in his field after Beautiful Days a few year's ago - only a few died though, small price to play for pretty lights dripping vitriolic parraffin wax from the sky for a few minutes..
