I'll probably be doing this depending on who I travel with. However the thought of putitng up a tent for the night, taking it down again isn't overly appealing. Then again neither is sleeping in a car.

why not? :P:P

People will turn up, park, and spend the night chatting/drinking/sleeping, waiting for the gates to open.

What on earth cannot work about that?

Yes it's good to maybe free up some traffic during rush hour but for me what doesn't work is the people arriving even earlier than usual, then the normal arrivals Wed all queuing at the at the gates to get inside the fence at the same time. Can you imagine queue starting at maybe 5-6 am to get in the gates, where is that q going to be by opening time & beyond!!

Why would you rush? you're there already, you have a base - most people would wait until the queue had shortened before entering - or are people that desperate to pitch their tent in an exact spot?

By all means let people on to site earlier but let them through the gates to camp also.

Look, it's your choice when you turn up. If you don't want to queue then don't - turn up on the Thursday.

The fact is that doing things this way will cause much less disruption for the locals, who were gridlocked for 12 hours last June.

Opening the car parks early isn't being done for you, it's being done for them.

"Let's face it, there's 100,000+ people all going to one guy's house for the weekend."

refriedgenes, an awesome description of Glastonbury - seriously.

I would guess that this is to avoid festi-goers hanging around before gates open, clogging up the local roads and generally causing a nuisance. Can't really see it working TBH.

We arrived at about 6:30-7:00am last year and like many others just parked up on the verge (totally illegally in terms of Road Traffic law) and waited for for the gates to open. There were hundreds doing the same, and I'll do the same this year. Changing the opening time of the (carpark) gates won't make a great deal of difference to me.

I think the idea is to get people off the roads for the safety of themselves and the locals but surely it's just going to lengthen the time of disruption. Let's face it, there's 100,000+ people all going to one guy's house for the weekend. You can't avoid traffic queues.

Also, imagine how many people sitting bored in a carpark with nothing to do, just 'fancy a couple down the local?' :P

And what about people getting a bit chilly, drinking, and making a little bonfire for warmth and bonhomie, in a (hopefully) dry grass field, full of cars, which are in turn, full of petrol. That is something I would watch, from a distance.

1. What would someone turn up before the car parks opened and wait around? What advantage will it give them? Zilch, none. So make sure you turn up AFTER they've opened.

2. it will lessen the disruption hugely, because the 100,000+ people turning up to spend the weekend at one guy's house will turn up over a much bigger timeframe.

3. It's very likely that it won't be permitted to leave the car parks to go down the pub.

4. It's very likely that fires won't be permitted.

Be responsible and help police any rules, for the good of the festival. That way there won't be any issues.

Personally, I would keep the publicised time of opening the car parks the same, (I think it was 8:00am?), but in actuality, open them a few hours beforehand.

it can't be done on the quiet, because it's a licencing issue and licencing issues are all public domain information.

    • Pretty much all festivals lose out on major artists because of production limitations though. Glastonbury is no different to most other festivals.  Lots of acts can/will adapt their tour production to suit festival stages if they want to play them, but some acts with stage designs and routines just don't want to adapt, and would rather just stick with a rigid, well-rehearsed production and take the money for their own gigs, whether that's a lot more than playing Glastonbury, or slightly less than playing some other festivals (but with added complications). Trying to adapt the stage, layout, access to b-stages etc to accommodate a single headliner on a Friday and then having to change it all around for a Saturday headliner isn't really a goer when most headliners can just easily adapt their show to stay on a main stage, if they're so inclined. They have a year to figure out how to perform a song on a main stage and ditch a few dance routines out on a b-stage if they really put their mind to it. It's not that difficult......
    • I would be all over Wolf Alice but may have outgrown this venue.    Also have to consider the schedule they have been on this year so may be on a break.  This last 10 days alone they did Tramlines, New York, Chicago and Kendal Calling.  Although make hay while the sun shines may come into play.
